Best milk substitute for porridge please?

I'm not vegan but I have a friend coming to stay who is and I'm keen to have plenty in for her to eat. I'm quite interested in making substitutions for is as a family anyway.

I have asked her if there's anything in particular that she would like me to have in and she just said 'any milk that isn't milk' grin Any recommendations? Particularly for something that will go well with porridge?

I personally like cashew milk, hazelnut milk or oat milk with porridge best 😊

I like it with water but maybe I’m just odd grin. Seriously, bit of sugar, honey or salt if you prefer it that way and I think most people would be hard pressed to know.

Oat milk! Double oats. Delicious.

Is oat milk with oats a bit 'oaty'? grin Forgive my ignorance!

ShowOfHands Mon 27-May-19 20:14:02

Definitely oat milk.

Porridge is always going to be oaty; just embrace it!

I just make mine with alpro Soy unsweetened. I've tried other types and all leave me with the shakes before lunchtime.

Oat milk. It's naturally quite sweet. If you want creamier porridge you could use Oatly cream which is a bit thicker.

I also say definitely oat milk.

I can tolerate oat milk in my tea too.

I agree re the Oat Milk. Tastes so nice - has a creamy texture.

Singlenotsingle Mon 27-May-19 20:17:26

Coconut milk gives the porridge an interesting coconutty flavour.

Meant to say I do mine as "overnight oats" so in a pot with the oat milk in fridge.

I'm not vegan, but dairy free and I like cashew milk in porridge best. It's very creamy.

Drogosnextwife Mon 27-May-19 20:19:47

Coconut milk is lovely in porridge. I have it a lot.

I love Koko coconut milk or Oatly Oat milk with my porridge. Get some Oatly barista for hot drinks and you're all set - it makes the best hot chocolate!

I use oat milk, it makes it nice and creamy and doesn't add a nutty or soya taste. I add a spoonful of ground almonds to add protein as oat milk isn't as high in protein as cows milk or soya milk.

I'm not a vegan, but prefer to make my porridge with almond or hazelnut milk, because it tastes better.

Almond milk. It also tastes good in tea. And smoothies.

Eminybob Mon 27-May-19 20:45:56

I’ve discovered almond milk recently and really enjoy it (although I’m a bit hmm at the small % of actual almond in it)
I’m not vegan but I like the flavour and it saves a few calories compared to cows milk.

Oat milk is fab with any cereal!

GaraMedouar Mon 27-May-19 20:48:32

Almond milk in porridge. Oat milk for a milky coffee. Soya milk in tea. Rice milk on dry cereal. Any other way around does not work for me! smile

SingleMumFighting Mon 27-May-19 20:52:01

Coconut milk but we also use plain water. Its tastes just fine when served with a sweetener like maple syrup, raisins,...etc.

BenWillbondsPants Mon 27-May-19 20:56:02

Looks like I'll have about 4 different milks in the fridge, thanks folks! grin

Oat or Almond milk I prefer with my porridge and try date syrup for an amazing natural sweetner - it doesnt get better !! x

Oat milk, specifically Oatly Barista. It's so nice in porridge, we all use it in this house even the ones without allergies.
