Jack fruit

I’ve noticed tins of jack fruit becoming available but I don’t know what to do with it.
I’ve tried looking for recipes but lots of them are American and include ingredients I don’t know.

What are your favourite jack fruit recipes?

Apparently it makes a great alternative for pulled pork if you mix it with bbq sauce

DP just eats it straight from the tin!

Personally I find the flavour a bit strong. I'd buy a tin and see what you think before you get too excited..

Currently esting a Jackfruit burger unfortunately not home mate but bought from Sainsbury’s. I’m very impressed and will try some other of the range.

I was wondering about this too, is it usually tinned? I have no idea what it even looks/tastes like

Well I tend to shop exclusively on Ocado (or Aldi). Ocado have three different tinned versions. I’ve not seen it in Aldi either fresh or tinned.
We do have a very good world food grocers in town so I’m willing to bet I could buy fresh if I wanted.

Try this. I've not tried the recipe personally but I have tried the results of somebody else's cooking and it is delicious.

I made a nice curry yesterday using mushrooms, black beans and jackfruit. Just onions, coconut milk and carribean curry powder added.

It's available in tins in Sainsbury's. With the tinned fruit (unsurprisingly I suppose!)

Having it for dinner tonight in tacos! We do it like pulled pork, also have it on flatbreads as pulled pork and it’s delicious. It is hard to find in supermarkets but in the tinned isle. Simple to cook as well, we boil it on the hob with some spices and extra water, basically mush it up and add bbq sauce. Never had it any other way though so intrested to see how others use it

I don’t know how do to pulled pork though. I gave up meat about 25 years ago and pulled pork wasn’t a thing then.

That’s the one we use, you can get the more ‘upmarket’ chilled ones that sometimes are already flavoured like bbq pulled pork, like uptons barbecue jackfruit. The vivera range is really good vegan products, their kebab/fish cakes are lovely - (I am a meat eater and can safely say they’re just as good)

I've never had the tinned ones always had it fresh so don't know if it come with the seeds inside when tinned but the seeds taste very nice if you roast them then take the shell off....try it

So do you need to cook it, as opposed to it being nice hot?
Can you use it in things like pasta?
What about chilli?

Pizza Express use it on a pizza. It's ok but quite strongly flavoured. It was too much for me on a whole pizza.

I had a massive allergic reaction to it, so try a little bit first.

I buy mine in aldi at the moment, but my local one has loads of vegan stuff left from its vegan week as I'm not exactly in a highly vegan populated area Grin
I made some great bbq texmex style pulled jackfruit a few weeks back, can't find the recipe again though frustratingly. I've used it a few times for various things with varying results, the pulled pork thing does seem to be the most popular use though.

Tinned doesn’t need to be cooked but to get the pulled pork texture it does. You can define your own recipes with it but we tend to put some extra water in a pot, pour in the tinned jackfruit, boil it, put in onions/spices if preferred, as it cooks it will start to fall apart a bit, just help it along with a fork to mash it up a bit, as water boils away add in some bbq sauce (again if preffered) - use on tacos, stir fry, flatbreads/pizzas etc

Does it have protein in it?

We had it with warmed with a spicy mango sauce in wraps recently. I bought it not really knowing what it was but was pleasantly surprised.

Also I still don’t really know what it is Grin

Does it have protein in it?

I’m not a vegan but this came up in active threads. We like the tinned stuff as a pulled pork alternative. However IIRC from seeing a tv prog recently it’s carbohydrate really rather than protein so it’s not a great sub for pulled pork nutrionally
