Vegan

does anyone successfully eat vegan AND gluten free?

I feel a little like I am going round in circles rather, I can eat GF and vegan for a while but then just seem to run out of ideas and get ravenously hungry.

Fortunately I love curry! also fortunate is the fact that when I do eat GF and vegan I feel great.

Any ideas or great books? Not surprisingly I have 'Deliciously Ella' already. TIA

Me! Have been gluten free for a while now as my tummy just feels better without it. Only recently vegan. I do like Deliciously Ella's idea but usually tweak the recipes to add onion and adjust the spices a bit. Have a look on Madeleine Shaw's website, select vegan in the recipes section and there are loads of nice ideas.
I have mostly been eating beany stews/chillies with rice/quinoa/buckwheat. And using lots of tahini, makes everything taste nicer!

Most of the time. I am gluten intolerant rather than coeliac and when eating out if it's a choice between vegan or gf I will eat gluten to keep vegan. At home it's much easier. However the only vegan gluten-free bread products I've found are BFree brand, they do good sliced loaves, rolls, bagels and wraps, i order them monthly direct from their website and freeze them as they can be difficult to find.

Also disappointed to not be able to experiment with seitan and other gluten-based fake meats, but meh, it keeps me away from processed crap I guess.

Doves farm flours (some of their cookies etc are also vegan)? Rice (obvs) and potatoes, nuts.
Stir fry with rice noodles. We have a recipe for a sort of stirfry with broccoli, butternut & cashews which is lovely (serve with the rice noodles). Lots of new gf pasta options too.

Bfree pittas and things are now being stocked in Asda and Tesco if that helps. They are the only gluten free pittas that I like.

Profusion chickpea pasta is nice, I prefer it to brown rice pasta

Have just added a loaf of bfree bread to my sainsburys order! Am contemplating the sweet potato wraps too, has anyone tried them?

Yes and they're good - especially warm for fajitas

Thank you for the tips! and the web site Todayisanewday75. RL has been a little stressful so I have not had a chance to get onto MN and reply.

In the meantime I typed 'vegan' into the ocado search and came up with some good food, I also bought the <a class="break-all" href="//www.amazon.co.uk/Soupologie-Plant-based-gluten-free-cleanse-energise/dp/1785040952/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1495530148&sr=1-1&keywords=soupology&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank"> Soupology cook book which advertises itself as plant bases and gluten free, but it is effectively vegan.

I have just tried the bfree bread, had a sausage (vegan obviously!) sandwich for breakfast, it was really tasty - tempted to have another one now ...

Nelly I love it when you type vegan into the search and it comes up with things like carrots. Do people really need to be told that vegetables are vegan? Or am I missing something?

It makes you wonder. Are some people expecting to see non vegan carrots?

That said I did once feel very pleased with a few vegan looking purchases only to discover a knob of herb butter hidden in among a tub of ready meal veg. This was near the beginning of my vegan eating, I am a bit more thorough with reading labels now.

Hi, I'm a coeliac with a chronic nerve disease and I'm wanting to try to go vegan...
Things are already tricky with being GF, but I eat really well...but cutting meat, fish and dairy out feels like a huge step! I've looked online but what I'm really hunting for is a kind of gentle guide to becoming vegan. I've got a husband and daughter who won't be going the whole hog yet, although they'll be cutting some things and eating more veggies :)
A lot of 'easy' vegan recipes have loads of new, strange (to me) things and I don't think I'll be able to dive in quite that drastically, so to speak. I'd rather climb down the steps and immerse myself slowly lol!
I've read that protein isn't a worry with being vegan, but B vitamins are. Anything else I need to know?
Any guidance very gratefully received :)

I cook quite run of the mill stuff for my kids and 'veganise' it for me.

E.g. they have pasta and meatballs and tom sauce- I have same sauce and pasta but olives instead.

They have chicken fajitas, I have tofu which has been marinated in the same stuff as the chicken (different bowl obviously!)

They have macaroni cheese… I do a white vegan sauce with unsweetened soya milk and some chestnut mushrooms/spinach etc.

Subbing red lentils instead of mince works well e.g. in lasagne/spag bol and chickpeas are good to use in stews etc that would ordinarily use chicken.

If you are coeliac and want to be vegan it might be a good idea to embrace tofu if that's on your 'strange' list. There are lots of different brands. Some are gross. Some are delicious.

Thanks dangermouse, that's really helpful! Do you use tinned twenties and chickpeas? :)

Try Pinterest for ideas, I find it really helpful.

Also shopping at Asian supermarkets is a great place to get gluten free ideas, like rice noodles or rice flour, chickpea flour etc.

Thanks. I'm fine with the gluten free side of it and getting different things like rice products etc as I've been a coeliac for a long time and home cook, but I've never cooked with chickpeas or lentils so was wondering if tinned is best or to use dried lentils?
:)

Red lentils you can cook straight from the packet (wash first) in about 20 mins so no need for tins. I always use tinned pulses like chickpeas though.

I would recommend buying this Madhur Jafffrey book: <a class="break-all" href="//www.amazon.com/Curry-Easy-Vegetarian-Madhur-Jaffrey/dp/0091949475?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank">//www.amazon.com/Curry-Easy-Vegetarian-Madhur-Jaffrey/dp/0091949475?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Not all vegan, but a high proportion are, and so easy and varied and delicious.

Thai curries would also be good, with coconut milk in them and served with rice.

Some good ideas, it's really interesting...
Are there any good 'becoming and staying vegan' books with recipes in?
