Vegan Camping?

Morning!

So, we are visiting Shell Island at the end of May. No electricity (Don't even get me STARTED on MN withdrawal- dreading it already!) so no fridges etc.

We are planning to do a little food shopping beforehand, as, not only is the on-site spar expensive, but there may not be anything there I can actually eat!

Am I going to starve?

Sea water and sand are both vegan, right? If I boil a veggie stock cube up with them for flavor? 😂

Seriously...any ideas? What can I take with me? Tins? Some snack ideas would be good, too, as I'm hypoglycaemic.

Take a cool bag or box. I would think the site has ice block freezing facilities.

Dried pasta? Tins of beans?Bread?jacket spuds to do on the bbq?

Why didn't I think of potatoes?

Dumb wuestion, but how long do you think vegan spread would last out of the fridge? I know you can leave butter out of the fridge, but not sure about Unbutter?

If you have a cool bag and keep refreezing the ice blocks it will last for as long as you are thete.

Rice, cous cous, pasta. Tinned veg, you could make up a chilli. Ratatouille with bread? Using different combinations of pulses, veg spices you could make up a fair bit.

Mashed avacado, lime juice, garlic powder and dried basil makes a really nice pasta sauce.

You could take homemade frozen meals for the first day or two, they will cool whatever else is in your cool bag aswell. I am going to buy a couple of tins for the days when we are back late and need something quick, Sainsburys have tinned veg and lentil curry, chick pea Dahl and ratatouille and lots of places sell veg stagg chilli tins.

Tins and jackets will be your friend! If you have a cool box take some veggie burgers (refrigerate not frozen) and eat them! You'll be fine and don't forget coffee!

I usually make and freeze a chilli for the first night.

Falafels in wraps
Sachets of couscous
Will you have a camp fire? If so you can do giant garlic mushrooms cooked in foil and jacket spuds
Sachets of miso and noodle soup
Sosmix to make into sausages, cook in a pan with pan fried tomatoes and sliced fried potatoes
Take a pack of stir fry veg, a tin of coconut milk, a small tub of vegan Thai curry paste and some dried noodles. Cook all together in a pan and hey presto Thai veg noodle soup.

For snacks look at cereal bars, crackers with vegan spread such as tartex, bags of roasted nuts, bananas, vegan cake etc.

I think it's probably easier to eat vegan when camping than any other diet. Just takes more planning.

I camp for 2 or 3 nights regularly without electric.
Freeze a bottle of water before you go and use as cold pack. Take bread, linda mccartney sausges, vegan cheese or hummous, pot noodle (beef).
We have sausage sandwiches for brekkie, pot noodle or a sandwich for lunch and chippy tea - simple. Its a case of slumming eat and just filling up when camping, you want the energy for all that walking, its lovely round there.

Normal couscous is good as you just put it in the hot water and leave it covered and it cooks on it's own. Quinoa doesn't take long, especially if you just let it steam like you do with couscous for the last bit of cooking time. Bulgar wheat is quick too. I usually take a small amount of oil and fry some onion, veg and add some kind of sauce.

You can take vegan pesto and pasta. Sometimes you can find vegan gnocchi/vegan filled pasta in health food shops.

Falafel, hummus, loads of ready made salads e.g. bean salad are vegan for lunches. You get those long life pates if you're into that sort of thing.

Porridge for breakfast/beans on toast

The main thing is lots of wine/beer….I've only ever been camping as a vegan and I've never, ever starved Grin
