Any other than BA and BMI?

Don't fly from Heathrow - your time at the airport will be longer than your flight. Easyjet - Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, Ryanair - Stansted

I would get the train tbh. Nicer trip and not much more timewise!

There is more than one airport in Scotland so the train may not be as short a journey - it depends where OP is going.

Oh thank you! I will pass the info on to my family in USA. They are travelling into heathrow and want to go straight to scotland for a week, I am not sure exactly where they might be going to yet, maybe they don't yet know. I will tell them to get coach to another airport. They won't want to do train as they are flying in from LA so will already be very tired!

If they are transferring it is a different matter - coach will be a nightmare transfer if you have just got off a tranatlantic flight.

The easiest way to find out who flys where is actually to look at the destination airport website and see where they fly to.

LOL, I will tell them not to get the coach then!

I fly up and down to Heathrow from Aberdeen a lot. Not usually a problem - BA will feed you, BMI need paying for their sandwiches.
Only thing I think you need to remember is that, in my experience, the Scottish flights are the ones that get delayed easily. And if the Aberdeen flight gets too delayed, you end up being flown to Glasgow and then coached up to Aberdeen (the airport has a curfew).

libra - that is useful thank you. I am sure they are not fussed about the sarnies, they want cheap and easy!

where in scotland do they want to visit?

Depends where they want to go as not everywhere goes to everywhere iyswim?

I use flybe and BMI most often, BA is slightly higher priced and thankfully! Easyjet don't do the route I need.

I don't think they know themselves!!! They want castles and history and all sorts.

Tell them Moray/Speyside is lovely esp if they like whisky

Report
PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 31/08/2009 11:48

Oh they are a bit partial to their whisky! What airport is that? I will let them know, they will be happy for some guidance. Alas, I have not been to Scotland (bad of me I know) so I am unable to recommend.

Aberdeen or Inverness. I know I am biased as I live here but it makes a change from the usual Edinburgh that all the Americans do

Google for the Malt Whisky Trail

What time of year are we talking? NTS castles will be shutting around October for the winter.
Don't think the distilleries ever shut...

Ah, they won't do any castles then as they are coming over for christmas. They are 'nipping' to scotland before heading down to Devon To them though its a mere hop. They live in california and regularly travel to Texas and Hawaii

They may find that a lot of tourist things won't be open over Christmas though

We have been down to Edinburgh for the last two years for that week between Christmas and New Year. If that is when they are coming, I would recommend Edinburgh.
While the NTS places are not open, we went round both the castle and Holyrood Palace at that time, and there is the whole New Year thing (fireworks, parties, ice-skating, etc) going on there non-stop.
There's not a lot going on in Aberdeenshire at that time apart from pretty countryside and the cold.

ah, they should have researched it better, they are coming between 17th and 21st then to us in devon for christmas, they should have done us first!

Eleanor - that is great to know, I think that is what they are hoping to do, we are all staying in a wonderful cottage not far from Exeter so that would be perfect. I will tell them.

I wish I was going too, but I will have a newborn (4/6 weeks old or so) by then, not going anywhere!
