Hotels in December

Need some suggestions for hotels in north of England or Scotland that will do for my mum's 60th in December but also have things to keep a 20 month entertained. I'm thinking York or Edinburgh but am open to other suggestions

Caledonian Hilton in Edinburgh. Has nice pool - kids eat free. Huge play area in Princes St gardens about 150 m from hotel. Walking distance from stn. Could go to Edinburgh zoo depending on weather.

Other suggestion is Peebles Hydro. Have a look in the hotels reviewed on this website. Bottom od this page under the 'holidays UK and Ireland' section.
