York hotels without breaking the bank

My wonderful fantastic parents have offered to have the DCs overnight so DH & I can have a night away during the summer holidays. I'm thinking of York - I know the city really well because I used to live there, but it's been a long time, and I'm no longer up to date with where to stay.

Can anyone suggest anywhere to stay (in the city centre) which isn't heart-stoppingly expensive? I'd love to find some quaint little 'secret address' type place, but to be honest I'd settle for a Hilton / Marriott / Holiday Inn type thing as we'd go and eat out anyway. It's just a case of trying to get a good price on somewhere in one of the UK's most popular cities during peak tourist time .

We dis the same a few months ago, I checked out Hotel du Vin and the Hilton - both were extremely pricey especially the Hilton - wanted £300 for 2 nights. There is The Queens which is in the city again I think its around £90 a night.

In the end we stayed at the Premier Inn (North) newly refurbished, there was a bus stop outside and buses were every 10 mins. the room was newly decorated and very nice. There was also a lovely pub next door called the Doormouse which did fab meals. We paid £130 for 2 nights. Then really splashed out on lovely meals in the day time and evening, did a boat trip and of course went round the Castle and Railway Museum!

I think you need to check out the Blue Rooms - behind the Blue Bike restaurant (and owned by the restaurant).

It's not a hotel, as such, but it's by far the nicest place to stay in York - we go about 4 times a year.

The rooms are more like apartments, really, full kitchens and they leave you breakfast every day (more than you could hope to eat), plus bread, jam, a bottle of champagne, beers, mixers, gin and whisky. There's an honesty wine rack too.

If you get the Fosse room you can even feed the ducks out of your bedroom window as it looks directly over the water.

And it's on a great road for restaurants.

Alternatively, have a look at The Lamb and Lion in, which is on High Petergate, right up next to the walls, another great location, and very reasonably priced considering you are basically right next to the Minster.

Other places we have stayed are Marmadukes (a bit further out of town, but walkable) and I think, if you're looking for something really romantic, that the same people who own Marmadukes have now opened up Lendal Tower as a 3 room B&B.

MIL and her friend got a really good deal at the Hilton the other week - something like £80 a night for two of them I think - no idea how they managed it though!

wow, Verity, that sounds perfect. I've been looking at their website and the rooms look beautiful. Go on, break it to me gently... what sort of cost are we looking at?
