I'm going to Lystep Bay in Tenby for a week at the end of the month in a caravan. Not got a big budget, so am looking for good things to do in surrounding areas.

Anyone?

MrsMcCluskey Thu 04-Jun-09 16:40:31

Oakwood is good for a 'big' day out
Avoid the Dinosaur park - rip off
A trip to Caldey Island is good.
Bosherton lilly ponds are stunning with a lovley walk to Newgale beach
If the weather is good, just beach, beach and more beach! It is stunning so enjoy!

MrsMcCluskey Thu 04-Jun-09 17:09:15

Lydstep is a lovely site btw!
THe aqauraium in TEnby is a bit on the pokey side.
St davids is very pretty with nice food in the refectory at the Cathedral
Heatherton is good as you only pay for what you go on
Folly farm is good for little ones

IotasCat Thu 04-Jun-09 17:13:48

It's a very loooooong walk from bosherton to newgale grin

MrsMcCluskey Thu 04-Jun-09 18:11:30

THere are 2 Newgales arent there?
NEwgale east?
Or Am i confused??

IotasCat Thu 04-Jun-09 18:14:03

You mean broadhaven and broadhaven south

MrsMcCluskey Thu 04-Jun-09 18:16:09

Doh I meant broadhaven beach!!
Yes a walk to Newgale might take some time!

elliepac Thu 04-Jun-09 18:17:18

The walk at Bosherston lily ponds is to broadhaven beach and the tea room is bosherston is lovely.

I would second Folly Farm for the little ones. Caldey Island is worth a visit (you can get an inexpensive boat ride from Tenby).
Otherwise beaches. Tenby is good. Barafundle is stunning though a bit of a walk depending on age of DC's. Broadhaven as mentioned above is my favourite. Pembroke Castle is fab.

Have a lovely time. Am going there myself in August. Can't wait grin

Oooh - I love Lydstep. We have been for the past few years running and absolutely love the place. Nearly every caravan has a sea view and there are some fantastic cliff top walks from the far end (clubhouse end) of the site. Which area of the site are you in? We have been in Beach Drive and Caldey View - both of which have been lovely

In the local area Tenby is great for a wander - is really quaint with good pubs and lovely beaches. There is an ice cream parlour there that do huge sundaes! The multi storey car park is cheap (about 50p) to park and next to a Somerfield where you can stock up on picnic food.

Further away (driving distance) you have Broadhaven South which is truly gorgeous and Barafundle Bay which is glorious. It is a walk but a relatively short one and well worth it. There are access steps though if you have a buggy though these are not steep. Freshwater East is nice too which is a nut closer than the other two.

Folly Farm is great for all ages and you can easily spend a whole day there. Avoid the bowling / activity place (I forget its name) because it is pricey and not worth the money.

If the weather is good you really will have loads to choose from and won't need to spend a fortune. Hope you have an amazing time...I am jealous as we are not going this year for once and I wish I was envy smile

PS - if you CAT me I have a tip how to get cheap clubhouse passes. Can't post on here as it is a secret lol but it will save you loads

jodee Fri 05-Jun-09 22:19:22

Hi Notalone, if it's OK, I'm trying to CAT you but having trouble with the subscription (have told MN Towers) - I'm going to Lydstep Beach in the summer, staying in Beach Drive, really looking forward to it!

Notalone Fri 05-Jun-09 23:08:52

Hey Jodee. Course its ok! Beach Drive is fab btw - the views are lovely! We stayed at Beach Drive a couple of years ago and from the top of my head we were approx no 107. The caravan we stayed in has been moved to another site because the owners we rented from could no longer afford the site fees, but the best part was the view and all the caravans have got verandahs (most also have patio furniture) so you can sit out and make the most of it.

I will wait for your email and let you know re the passes smile

you HAVE TO go to Folly Farm

we were there nearly 6 hours.....zoo, farm, endless play area's. huge indoor play area, smaller ones, traditional indor fair, most rides 50p

My kids loved it, been twice now, just fantastic. Best place we have ever been to with the kids, and you can get in free with tesco days out vouchers

we have just got back from a fantastic week near Tenby. the kids were in the sea most days!

Saundersfoot beach was their fave

Also the Blue Lagoon was lovely

can give you links if you want

jodee Sun 07-Jun-09 14:06:34

Still can't CAT, Notalone, have to wait until office hours at MN Towers I guess!

We were at Camarthen Bay (Park Resorts) last year (wouldn't go again) and it was too far for the day trips we made to Folly Farm (100% agree with you, anniebear!), Oakwood and Tenby. We wanted to be nearer to Tenby this year and all your rave reviews of Lydstep Beach sold me on it, Notalone! smile

anniebear Sun 07-Jun-09 16:02:44

can also use tesco days out vouchers at Oakwood

Notalone Sun 07-Jun-09 18:29:03

Aw - glad to have been of assistance Jodee (wonder if Lydstep would consider giving me a finders fee lol!)

I am in Scotland this week but will send you my handy hint on my return smile

jodee Sun 07-Jun-09 18:56:49

LOL!

No problem, will CAT later in the week.

Have a lovely time in Scotland, try not to make friends with the midges! smile

Sorry i've not been back to this thread before - i forgot about it! blush

There's just going to be me, ds 4, and dd 1, and i'm not exactly sure where abouts we are staying - since my dh passed away ds is having therapy from a local charity and they have a caravan down at Lydstep which they are letting us use for a week. Folly farm sounds like a good idea though for a day out. I'm hoping that we have lots of fine days as i know ds would be more then happy on the beach.

CAT isn't working for me either, but my email is deementedATmailDOTcom smile

MrsMcCluskey Tue 09-Jun-09 18:35:53

Folly Farm will be great for your tow thwn, the other attractions are prob too old for them.
The boat trip to Caldey might be too ambitious.
If you want a nice safe beach - Saundersfoot is good as their is a natural big paddling pool and buncy castle on the beach.
Hope you have a lovely time.

IotasCat Tue 09-Jun-09 18:47:30

Has anyone mentioned manorbier? It's not far from lydstep and has a castle and a great beach.

MrsMcCluskey Tue 09-Jun-09 19:05:19

Ive never been to Manorbier, will have too check it ou next time I am down there"

elliepac Tue 09-Jun-09 19:08:06

ooh manorbier is fab and very pretty. It is off the main road from pembroke to tenby. We really liked it because the water was nice and shallow for DS to play in. Plus it's a little of the beaten track so not as crowded as tenby et al.

Deemented Wed 10-Jun-09 06:57:11

Thanks for all the input - Manobier sounds worth a look!

chimchar Wed 10-Jun-09 07:08:33

tenby is ace...another vote here for folly farm....it is so worth a trip, even more so with your age little ones. someone said the dinosaur park is crap....it is, but my kids loved it! lol. its not cheap though.

saundersfoot beach is lovely. you can walk all the way over to a place called wisemans bridge from there...you walk through tunnells carved in the rock...again, my kids loved that. there is conveniently a nice pub at the end for food, also brill rockpools there. be sure to take a bucket and spade!

lots of lovely little shops in tenby, but hard work with a buggy...

if the weather is completely awful, go to blue lagoon for the morning (but avoid fri/sat eves!!) its fab!

hope you have a good time.smile

MrsMcCluskey Wed 10-Jun-09 21:23:51

Ooh Wisemans Bridge Pub is a fave of mine!
