The South Hams

We'd like to stay in the South Hams in August, pref around the Salcombe area.

We stayed there in 2006 and loved it but were further up towards Loddiswell.

I am wondering whether it's better to stay in Salcombe and get the ferry over to the beaches at Mill Bay/East Portlemouth or to stay in the village of East Portlemouth itself?

We will have a child aged 4 and an 8 week old baby. Would like to use the beaches most days (weather permitting) but would also like to get over to Thurlstone/Bantham and perhaps to eat out in Salcombe in the evening.

I was thinking there might be a pub in East Portlemouth but can't find information.

I know East Portlemouth is on a hill. Was thinking DH could drive the car down there early in the morning with all the beach gear and get a parking spot then we could trundle down with the baby in a sling.

Or would we be better in Salcombe??!!

Does anyone know the area??

Hiya

I grew up in the area, lived there 25 years.

I am pretty sure that there isn't a pub in East Portlemouth and the ferry over to Salcombe doesn't run at night, last one at about 5.30pm. The nearest pubs are probably The Millbrook in South Pool and Pigs Nose in East Prawle. All pubs are at least 5 miles away, down windy lanes.

Are you good at driving on single track roads? just asking as my other half, who grew up in the Highlands (so a few single track roads there) absolutely refuses to drive around the lanes there, just a thought, you may be fine.

Anyhow if eating out is important then it will have to be Salcombe.

Getting a spot on the beach shouldn't be too much of a problem unless the tide is in!!

You could always hire a boat for the week and be first on the beach??

Its a great area but will be busy then, how about early september post school hols, the weather is usually just as good and as us locals say, the only Grockles (tourists) down are the newly weds and nearly deads.....

Lots of nice cottages in town (I used to clean them, during Uni holidays)

Have a good trip

yeah but DD starts school on September 3rd.

Thanks for the advice. I shall narrow it down to Salcombe then!
