Last year we stayed at Whitby Youth Hostel for a few nights, & with friends outside Ripon and Durham. We had a fab time. It's worth going to Whitby for the Magpie fish and chip restaurant alone, but yes the parking in Whitby is terrible, and though in a beautiful setting the hostel was a bit hard core for us at this stage. This year ideally we'd like to find a holiday let for us & 5 yr old twins near Yorks coast. Or a farm stay? All suggestions v gratefully received.

We have stayed in Staithes for several years running. It's a lovely old fishing village nestling at the bottom of the cliffs, and is about 10 miles North of Whitby. Lots of holiday cottages, the village is very self contained, but has a lovely harbour and beach as well as crab fishing and a few pubs and restaurants. We were there for a week the first time and didn't have to leave the village. My 5 year old DS loved it, especially the crab fishing.

We have been back a few times, always in the first week of the holidays and have had fantastic weather. Last year we were on the beach in our swimmies at 8pm it was sooo warm. Only probelm is gardens/outside space is at a premium due to the nature of the village, but cars are limited to local acess only so it's very quiet.

www.cottages4you.co.uk have lots of nice properties.

Oh, and you can hunt for fossils on the rocks when the tide is out....lots of fossilised shells in the rocks, and the occasional ammonite to be found. We've found some really good ones there and further along the coast in Port Mulgrave.

Thanks ToAMountain - I forgot we went to Staithes for the afternooon, isn't it wonderful and almost feels as if in a bit of a time warp. Will start checking cottages site.

If you are prepared to stay a little inland there are some great options. We stayed at groves dyke in Sleights (large garden, own private woodland) and easy drive to Sandsend (great beach with large pools at low tide) and Whitby. Can also do numerous day trips by bus or train. More recently we've been staying at Forge Cottage, Thornton le Dale (booked through Dales country cottages)- arguably one of the prettiest yorkshire villages. Still easy to access the coast - Scarborough or Whitby and great access to the moors and the wonderful Dalby forest. Lovely village and really pretty cottage right on the green with stream outside (sit and feed the ducks to your heart's content!.
Wonderful part of the world!
