Tell me about holidays in Wales, near Cardiff .......

I may be trying to achieve the impossible. I
know very little about Wales but would like a cottage holiday, rural, near the coast but within reasonable distance to Cardiff so that we could also visit for the day. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

How far is reasonable distance? Would an hour's travel be too far?

Somewhere in The Vale of Glamorgan perhaps? Cowbridge is nice but sligtly inland, Llantwit Major, Ogmore or Southerndown are right on the coast. All within easy reach of Cardiff too

we stayed here last year. It's quite rural, but near to the m4, so Cardiff was an easy day trip. Also very handy for Gower and Tenby in the other direction.

See, Vale of Glamorgan isn't brilliant coast IMHO. It's ok, like, but it's not the best. Gower is the start of the good beaches, but really that's an hour and a half from Cardiff.

If you go north, you could go up to the Brecon Beacons area, or perhaps the Wye Valley, which is gorgeous and rural.

You're right, the VOG hasn't got amazing beaches, lots of stones / pebbles (apart from Barry Island ) but op doesn't specify great brilliant coast, just to be near to it! There are however some stunning places within the VOG and Cardiff is in easy reach as is Swansea, Gower and the Brecon Beacons

Gower is an hour from Cardiff and voted the most beautiful beaches in Wales, in Uk in fact
