Can anyone recommend a family friendly hotel or similar in London (nearish to The Strand)?

We're going to the theatre in a few weeks time and want to make a midweek break of it. But I have no idea where to start looking - all the hotel websites are the same!
A recommendation would be really useful. Ideally we'd like a family room (for 4) or even a self-catering apartment for a couple of nights....

We have just spent two days at the Park Plaza County Hall - Waterloo but walking distance to the Strand.

A room on a higher floor (we were on 12th) gives you views over the river, London Eye and Houses of Parliament.

It was lovely and staff were fab with kids! Thoroughly recommend it but make sure you ask for river view

I have walked past these apartments within 20 yards of the Strand many times, but I don't know what they are like.

I've stayed in a Citadines in Paris, not London. It was clean, well appointed but fairly anonymous. A great idea for a family.
