We are off there for a free weekend, courtesy of Tesco clubcard! Any recommendations of things to do - kids are 7 1/2 and 9. Any good places to go walking / castles or anything at all?!

Tredegar House - lovely house and nice grounds to wander in, little play area there. Can't remember how much they charge to go into house. Just on the outskirts of Newport, off M4 J28.

Belle Vue Park in Newport, brilliant park, next to Hospital in Newport, band stand and nice little cafe there. Good play area. In the town.

Caerleon - Ampitheatre and Roman museum well worth a visit on a good day. Let the kids run around the grounds. Free CP and nice organic cafe-restaurant and lovely ffwrm bakery that you can get fab cakes and pastries from and grab a cup of coffee to eat outside or takeaway.

Caerleon well worth a wonder through lovely place, went to Uni there.

Visit Cardiff as well, Cardiff Bay is fab, only 15 mins - 20 mins in car from Newport. Most of Dr Who/Torchwood was filmed in Bay and a good trip.

Welsh Museum of Life at St. Fagans is a good visit too. Car Park is £3 for the day, no entrance charge, you do need a dry day. They have celtic huts, buildings etc. up to mining buildings etc. I love going there. Great for the children.

I can't think of anything else really in Newport, the shopping is pretty poor and you don't really want to go into Newport city centre to shop because there isn't a lot there and it is quite a dirty area. Use it as a base and travel to other areas.

Was also going to mention Caerleon.

Also Chepstow Castle, the Wye Valley (Tintern abbey and loads of lovely walks).

Bit further away: Caerphilly Castle, St Fagans Museum of Welsh life (the latter is also free and absolutely fantastic!)

Yes The Big Pit is a good trip, it is a little drive from Newport, if you are into Pits then ideal.

How long are you down for ???

The other side of the bridge but we often cross over to visit our Welsh neighbours!

I keep meaning to investigate the Dr Who exhibition there is supposed to be in Cardiff, but have not ventured to the capital yet.

If you are serious about wanting to walk, there are the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains of course.

Sugarloaf Mountain next to Abergavenny is a nice little hill.

Wow! Sounds like we'll have a great time!

We are staying at the Newport Hilton and there for 3 days.
