Mum and daughter short break ideas

Suomynona · 27/01/2019 14:32

Every March I (41yo) take my Mum (very youthful 78yo) away for a 3 night hotel break somewhere in the UK.

We're a bit stuck for ideas this year. We enjoy town or city breaks, ideally with fairly interesting shops (i.e not just primark, M & S etc), some form of historical interest (museums, walking/bus/ghost tours etc, National Trust properties in area) and some decent place to eat.

So far we've done - Cardiff, Torquay, Chester, York (twice), Bath, Stratford upon Avon, Shrewsbury. Our favourites have been York, Chester and Bath.

I do the driving, and don't want to drive more than around 3 hours (we live in Oxfordshire).

Suggestions very much welcomed!

Thanks

Edinburgh would fit the bill, you can always get the train or fly up if the driving is too much.

Brighton - North Laines And lanes have great shops. Lots of good food places.

Liverpool- lot of history. Some bits are more mainstream (thinking shopping) but eg bold street more quirky.

Why not London and see a show and the sights?
Brighton
Buxton is fab, but a long drive
Bristol - go to Clifton village
Exeter

Or maybe go to a fancy hotel for the experience? Champneys or The Scarlet or The Bedruthan if you like spas. That sort of thing?

Harrogate? There are lovely baths there, Betty’s tea rooms and some great shops.

Thanks all. I forgot to add Brighton to the list of places we've already been, we loved it there.

Also forgot to say @NeutralJanet that whilst I'd love to take Mum to Edinburgh, she flatly refuses to fly anywhere (petrified) and the train is ridiculously expensive sadly.

Some good ideas here - I like the idea of Liverpool, Norwich and Exeter in particular so will do a bit more research.

Thanks!

Hmm if you got a two together railcard you could potentially do a couple of nights in Newcastle then a couple more in Edinburgh...book far enough in advance and it can be so much more affordable.

winchester is a great shout (but would not recommend Windsor; fails many of your requirements!)

If you would consider Edinburgh, you can get the train for £30 each way. You have to search using the cheapest fare finder on the train websites, but there are always £30 tickets available if you know where to look!

@AllTheCakes - really? That sounds too good to be true!

Thanks @LondonBelongsToMe, but I've spent a fair amount of time in Winchester as my Sister lives nearby. Lovely place though!

Link for Cheapest Fare Finder. If you are flex on dates and booking a few weeks out you should be able to find the £30 seats Grin
