I am trying to organise a family get together, late September, in York for my father's 80th birthday. He wants to visit the Railway Museum, Minster etc. My mum would just like to spend time with the family and perhaps have afternoon tea.
My criteria are: accessible room with walk in shower, plus sitting space for 80 year old parents. 2 double rooms for myself and DH, plus my sister and her partner. 1 single/small double for 21 year old son. Ideally the hotel should have attractive public rooms - my mum likes to sit and chat but not in a bar type environment, and if possible lovely gardens to sit out in if the weather is good or to sit inside and look out at.
Ideally we would be in York, but happy to consider country house type hotels in the surrounding area.
We will eat out some of the time and eat in. Parents are not adventurous eaters, so ideally the hotel restaurant should serve some fairly traditional type meals, but my daughter who will be joining us as well is Vegan.
So far, the only places that seem to fit the bill and have good reviews on Trip Advisor are The Grand and The Principal, but these are quite pricey. I wondered about The Marriott near the racecourse, but reviews are saying it is scruffy -does anyone have recent experience. Also wondered about the Churchill.
Does anyone have any other suggestions (The Parisi which is a B & B looked ideal but they will not take bookings for more than 4 people in one party)
