Newcastle: Hadrian's Wall

Thinking of a 5-day trip here next month with the DC (12 and 13). We are going to go by train.

We were thinking of 3 days visiting Newcastle (one at the Beamish museum) and then a couple of days walking/ exploring the wall. Where should we stay during the walking bit that's easily accessible without a car? Any suggestions of good places to visit in or around Newcastle?

Thanks!

There is a bus service specifically for walkers. Hexham is nice and the bus goes from there. hadrianswallcountry.co.uk/travel/bus

Double check your pubic transport to and from Beamish. It's closer to Durham than Newcastle and I got public transport once and regretted it - although it was a long time ago and may have improved.

The new hostel at the Wall is supposed to be good.

Another saying Hexham is a nice town ( has a Waitrose). Stanhope is a village which is popular. If your wanting history to do with the Romans then check out Vindolanda and there is a roman soldier/ life musuem which is very interesting.

Ad122 bus great on the Northumberland side of the wall. Beamish is much nearer Durham

Life centre in Newcastle is great. Also along the wall Vindolanda.

And from June the great exhibition of the north is on. Though not really seen any details yet.

The Sill is fab. Perfect location (leave hostel, walk towards Wall, when you get there, turn right, you'll end up at Sycamore Gap, stunning views all the way along) and the building itself is amazing. WiFi actually works, etc etc. The pub next door is nice too.

I'm from this area and beamish is Co Durham so quite far from Hexham. Blanchland and Stanhope are nice areas to stay but if your wanting to do Hadrian wall then Hexham would be a good place to stay
