Mull?

Hi

We're off to Scotland in a campervan for 9 days in a few weeks. It's proving to be tight fitting everything in that we want to do!

I'd love to go over to an island for a day - thinking Mull or possiby Skye? Would love to see some wildlife. Is it possible in a day?

DD really wants to see dolphins but I think you need to be in the Moray Firth for that, is that right?

Well Mull or Skye are both wonderful, but Skye is more accessible because of the bridge. There is a glass bottomed boat trip that you can take, which our kids loved. You might get lucky and see otters too. I've never seen dolphins on the West coast, but there are always seals.
If you are walkers, head down to Glenbrittle for a walk in the Cuillins. If not, visit the Talisker distillery! Or both....

Both beautiful . If you go to Skye, visit Eileen Ban where Gavin Maxwell lived before he died, (author of Ring of Bright wATER). There are lots of great coffee shops and some fabulous artists working on Skye. If you go to Mull, try to get over to Iona which is really worth a visit. I saw a whale off Mull once, but the Moray Firth is somewhere you are more likely to see dolphins. If you stick to the West Coast and work your way up you will see some fabulous scenery. 9 days is not really enough though. Remember it is midge season so take some Avon Skin so Soft!

The ferry from Oban to Craignure takes about an hour. There is a ferry from Lochaline to Fishnish that takes about half an hour but if they are transporting a petrol tanker then nothing else is allowed on board (it's happened to us). Most of Mull is single track roads so journeys can be affected by whoever you meet coming the other way.

I've seen basking sharks from the ferry. Most trips are organised from Tobermory (allow about 40 minutes to get from Craignure ).
