Just that really. Ideally by the coast. But anywhere in U.K. Considered. We want to go away with a few other families and perhaps share some activities like day trips and barbecues but we are also keen to have our own living space sonideal would be a collection of two or three bed cottages that can be hired together and are next door or round a central courtyard.

we stay Here and they are great for kids with a place for everyone to eat together. near to Plymouth which is about half an hour away in a nice part of Cornwall.

also have a look at groupaccommodation, sleeps12 and groupstays, they are a good place to start.

If Northumberland appeals, google 'Outchester and Ross' - have stayed and can recommend!

There are a group of cottages in Piddletrenthide in dorset that have a shared pool. I've been as a child and considered it as an adult... Worth a look! I can't remember the name but easily googleable!

Would you consider the North Coast of NI? Giants causeway area. It's really spectacularly beautiful, lovely little seaside towns, good restaurants, lots of activities for kids and adults, blue flag beaches etc and there are several small groups of holiday cottages in that area. Generally cheaper than England or Scotland too in my experience. Maybe too far for you all to travel though.

We have stayed in Rose Cottage 1 in Durgan on the Helford River in Cornwall. There are two or three more cottages available. Amazing setting right on the beach, and next to Glendurgan and Trebah Gardens which are very beautiful. One has a maze and the other an adventure playground with a zip line. Lots to do around there as well.

We have stayed here www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g551660-d1828447-Reviews-or10-Wheel_Farm_Cottages-Combe_Martin_Exmoor_National_Park_England.html at Wheel Farm Cottages. There is a big indoor heated pool too. Have not been for a few years though, so worth reading the recent reviews.

We stayed here last year and loved it. A short drive to the Northumberland Coast near Seahouses. Lovely cottage, think it's one of three in a row, each with 3 bedrooms so would sleep 6.

Highly recommend

Should say each cottage has a little garden of its own but also a bigger communal garden

Not coastal but ideal for going as a group but having your own space. It has a communal area with barbecue and a bar you fill yourself.

Celtic Manor have amazing lodges, each sleep up to 10 people. Each family can have their own or two smaller families can share but they are big enough to have a bit of privacy.

We stayed in one of these last year and it was fabulous: www.grovecottages.com. Lake District. Amazing views from the cottages. Walks right from the front door. Near Ambleside. Would work really well with a group.

Another idea which is Northumberland is to stay in several of the Armstrong Cottages just outside Bamburgh. There is a little development of them and it's a fabulous location. They are all in separate ownership (some holiday companies own a couple, some are owned privately and rented out, real people live in some as their normal hous) so you have to google to track them down. We stayed in this one and my xSIL has stayed in several (at a different time to us) and had a great time. That would also work really well as a group.
