Norfolk - which village?

We are looking for a cottage in Norfolk this summer, I've seen loads available but don't really know where is nice?

Been to sheringham and Cromer before but tbh the only requirements are:

  • less than 15 mins drive from coast and decent child friendly beaches (not bothered about being actually on the coast as all booked up!
  • a shop and at least one pub that serves food
  • maybe a park for the kids in the village
  • nice village feel, don't want to be in a town really so would prefer something smaller
  • fish n chip shop?!
  • maybe somewhere we could hire bikes for a day not too far away?

Any tips on nice places to look? We will be driving from the North west so I suppose north Norfolk might be easier to get to.

Thanks

Thornham ticks all the boxes Apart from bike hire. We've been going for several years now and love it. The Orange tree is brilliant, award winning Castro pub food. Theres a few other pubs which are equally as good. There's a lovely deli/cafe for breakfasts, lunches, teas etc. There's a collection of farm cafe/shops/boutiques just outside the village which do the most amazingly fresh fish and chips I've ever had. Several beaches, a nature reserve are easily accessible. It's small enough to not be rammed but also big enough iykwim.

When I was growing up my grandparents lived in Potter Heigham. Its not to far from Yarmouth, and close-ish to Walcott beach which I prefer as its a wet beach rather than a dry sand beach. Also has a great chippy there!

We stayed at Walcott recently and can recommend the chippy, beach access was difficult though.

Happisburgh is another nice place.

Walcott, Hemsby, Mundesley, East Runton, Holt, Stiffkey. Mundesley has a great children's park.

Bike hire still possible at Bewilderwood, too?

Sea Palling has a nicer beach, mind.

In Winterton. Still has one week in August. Pub, small shops, chip shop and walking distance to the beach.

Burnham market is called Chelsea on Sea round here, not for family holidays really, London boltholes and pricey.

Kelling Heath is mobile homes not cottages but really lovely, well set out and secluded. Shop and restaurant on site, no wifi unless in the restaurant so you really get away from it all. Lots of lovely villages near and close to Cromer too.

Another vote for Thornham. We stayed last year and Orchard groves had great fish n chips and yurt cafe. And the orange tree was amazing for food.

Misty, that's it! I couldn't for the life of me think what it was called.

If you go to The Orange Tree you must have the TFC, Thornham Fried Chicken. Absolutely delicious.

Sadly I can't find anything in quite a few of these for the dates we are after. The places I can find are:

Holt
Burnham Market
Docking
Walsingham

I am guessing these are all slightly bigger than some of the smaller villages. Anyone any tips for which of those might suit best?

Burnham Market is a village. Lovely but these days very busy in summer - quite a bit of traffic unfortunately. Bakery, butcher, nice pub etc but also now Joules/Jack Wills/boutiques! Still love it though. You are quite near Holkham/Brancaster beaches and Burnham Overy Staithe is lovely with lots of boats etc and a great walk along the sea wall.
