We are wanting to drive down from York with two children who are 10 and 7 from York and i have no idea about this part of the country. Can someone advise about any good companies for self catering holidays. Thanks very much.

We have gone on holiday to cornwall quite a bit. as with all of our holidays we always book the bits of it ourselves so don't use agencies etc but book directly with the accommodation. you could start by having a look at the visitcornwall and visitdevon websites to get an idea of what you want to do and where you want to stay. assuming you are looking for school summer hols you might have left it a bit late for cornwall as it does book out a long way in advance, particularly the family friendly places. when we go to cornwall we stay HERE have no idea what spaces they have in school hols but worth a look as they have a swimming pool and are on the SE coast of cornwall. we prefer this bit because it is near to Devon not right down the end of cornwall and a bit quieter than the north coast. if you are booking your own place to stay then look for something star rated independently and also use tripadvisor. parking is a bit of a premium in most of cornwall and some parts of devon so make sure you sort this out where you are staying don't assume that a cottage comes with its own or any parking. whats your budget and what sort of thing are you looking for?

We've just booked a 4-night break with The Sun at Haven Riviere Sands in Cornwall in their top-of-the-range caravan for a grand total of £125 for 3 adults and two children. Can't wait! We're travelling from Lancashire Hmm

We've used this site for accommodation for 5 different holidays in the south west and they've always been excellent.

We go to St Ives every July. It's tradition and we just love it. St Ives holidays is a great site for self catering accommodation and the town itself is glorious with lovely beaches, great food and cure cobbled streets. Hope this helps x

We stay in Mawgan Porth every year. It's lovely. It's between Newquay and Padstow. There is lots to do within the local area and a lovely beach where you can have surf lessons. There is St Eval Go Karting a 5 min drive away and the Flow Rider at Retallack resort about a 15 min drive away. Loads of other stuff to do too. Great fun Smile. DS is 11 and loves it there.

We've booked several times with st Ives holidays it's a great place to stay but very few places come with parking. We tend to park in a long stay car park and leave it there all week without moving it but you may struggle if you are planning to drive out on lots of day trips. Although there is a train station

We stayed here in summer 2014 and it was lovely:

40 Brunel Quays

The car parking was a bonus. We managed a day trip to Land's End from there, so most places are very accessible. And there are a few decent pubs in the village (town?) so you don't have to drive if you fancy a tipple in the evening!
