We are going away in the summer for a few days break with family ranging from 7 - 80 years old. Anyone been to either of these recently and help us decide where to go? Or maybe there is somewhere else in that area?

Torquay itself is really really grotty, we live about 20 miles away. Exmouth is much nicer nearby

Hi,
We are going to Weymouth in a couple of weeks second year in a row ranging from 2-63 years old. Love it. Loads to do, lovely beaches, rock pooling, fossil hunting, sea life centre, paultons park, not tacky at all.
Never been to Torquay so can't compare but I reckon can't go wrong with Weymouth!

Thanks. Someone else said Torquay was not so nice so might take that off the shortlist!

I think for a proper seaside holiday, Weymouth is fantastic. And though I think most of the SeaLife centres aren't worth the money, the Weymouth one is great, and ds loved the waterplay there.

Parts of the harbour in Torquay are nice but the town centre itself is quite grotty.

Exmouth is not much better. Is Cornwall too far? Or maybe north Devon?

We only live six miles from Torquay, but don't go there is we can avoid it! OK if you want slot machines, bars, and probably easy access to drugs, but it's not the "English Riviera" it was a hundred years ago!

Yes, Exmouth is better, but possibly less convenient for access to other places. Teignmouth or Dawlish (of winter rail line infamy!) are small seaside towns, with a mix of accommodation and facilities, and within easy reach of Dartmoor.

Exmoor and the north coast have several resort towns, so look on maps and see what's there. Heritage railways, industrial archaeology sites, lakes and rivers, woodland and moorland throughout much of the Devon-Somerset-Dorset area.

We spent a week at Weymouth last summer. It was great - would have been even better if the kids had stayed home though (long story!) Wink. There are always vouchers around for discounts at the Sealife Centre so you shouldn't have to pay full price. Not sure if it's a permanent thing, but our tickets then allowed us a free trip up the sky-needle thing on the harbour (but I chickened out of that). Lots of nice places to go nearby too though I'd avoid Splashdown in Poole.
