I have been going there since I was a child (day trips when on holiday). My last two visits were dire. The pavements were heaving, people walking on the roads because there was nowhere else to walk and the shops were so packed you couldn't actually get through the door.
If you don't need to actually stay there, what about something in a quieter location and a day trip to Padstow. There are much prettier places in Cornwall.
Gorgeous place nr St Teath, self catering. Half hour's drive though. Google fig tree barn Cornwall. Stayed there when ds was 1yr old. Perfect. Bedrooms right next to each other on ground floor, next to bathroom. Living room upstairs. Baby monitor signal fine.
we stay just outside Looe when we go to Cornwall HERE New years eve in Looe is really great fun if you are staying on that long - childrens fancy dress party and fireworks off the beach at midnight. Padstow will be busier than most other places in cornwall because of the restaurants.
