The cheapest way to do the ferry is use tesco club card points. Otherwise there isn't much between the price at all. Early morning/later evening is cheaper, as is midweek. I'd just go from wherever is most convenient for you to get to. (I assume you're driving?)

As for where to stay, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor side of the island has lots going on and they are all nice towns. Sandown is busiest and most touristy, but still ok.

And personally, I love the island that much that I never mind the drive round to get to other places.

We've always camped on the island or stayed self catering.

A couple of years ago we stayed in a log cabin at Calborne Mill. It was beautiful and the bread in the tea room at the Mill was a bonus!

We have camped in various places.

Static caravans at Appuldurcombe are nice

Anywhere in Niton is good- Niton Barns cottages. Not stayed there but they look lovely, and Niton is a lovely peaceful villag.

Oh, and I'm giving all of my secrets away now, but check out Vintage Vacations (airstream caravans and individually decorated self catering dotted across the island)

U must visit shanklin chine. It's lovely. I also feel your 9 yr old has to go to black gang chine.
