My son is just over one, eats really well during the day and has been ebf and hasn't shown any signs of weaning himself yet. He's really active, crawling, trying to walk constantly and was under the weather last week, off his food and a bit sick. He has started to wake in the night and be unable to settle, even with a breast feed, and as he'd been poorly one night I offered him some banana which he scoffed and then settled himself fine! He's back on his food now but still waking unable to settle, despite lots of food during the day, breast feeds on demand and plenty of water so I've continued to give him a snack at say, 2 or 3 am. Have tried not giving it and he seems unable to settle, really shouting which is unlike him. As soon as he's eaten ges fine and snuggles down again. Am I being ridiculous or is he actually hungry? Am I creating a problem/bad habit for us? He has good daytime naps and a secure bedtime routine.

It's very normal for them to wake more when they are learning a new skill, like walking. What does he eat during the day?

My friend had a very tall dd and she was waking constantly for food. Her HV suggested that instead of giving 3 big meals with 2 snacks she fed her 5 or six meals during the day. Took a bit more though for a while but her dd started sleeping through.

Thanks so much. I think, like you said it may be a phase while he learns something new - his sleep was shot when he mastered crawling for about 3 weeks! Will persevere and see if its just that. The only other thing I can think of is if my milk supply has decreased and that may be effecting him but not sure. Will see how it goes.

What makes you think you milk supply has decreased good? By this age it should be pretty well established smile

Have you thought of speaking to a BFC? Have you got the helpline numbers?

Thanks, turns out it was a fussy period I think. Re my milk - my boobs are almost back to normal size (a cup sad) and was worried, but clearly it's fine!! X
