Its been a whilesonce I lived in Edinburgh, but there used to be a fantastic french place in one of the lanes off Rose Street, but its name escapes me

The Witchery is always a good bet, went there for my 30th, though will hurt your wallet a bit.

Depends on what kind of night you are looking for. Cocktails/dancing etc or pushing the boat out for more expensive meal which you can take your time over.

I remember him doing something with cheese, but not sure about the chap from Cafe St Honore. They both used to get their cheese board from Iain Mellis though. I used to work there as a student

The Honours on Castle Street, went there recently with friends and was totally fab.

The Witchery is lovely but expensive. For something cheaper but still great food I recommend Cafe Marlayne on Thistle St.
Another suggestion The Magnum on Albany St.

I would also recommend the Honours, or have a look at Rhubarb, Martin Wisharts or The Kitchen. My favourite though is Castle Terrace. In my opinion the witchery has gone downhill a little. A few minutes walk away and you could be in Ondine, eating way better food (if seafood is your thing). Can you tell that I'm in Edinburgh and a total foodie?!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'd love the Witchery but prob too expensive for this occasion. Will drop hints to my DH! Will check out the other links.

The witchery is overrated imho.

Wedgwood at the bottom of the royal mile is fabulous, and I also second a pp's recommendation of the magnum on Albany Street. For pre-dinner drinks Missoni has prosecco on tap.

I would also reccommend Ondine if you enjoy seafood. Some fizz at the Missoni first as suggested above is a great idea.

The Witchery was a huge disappointment my leek tartlet starter flew across the table the pastry was so hard, they took it off the menu, steak was also over cooked. Best memory was the wine list or encyclopedia it was fabulous and wine waiter was amazing. Wouldn't go again though
