Zoos near London which aren't London Zoo!

Okay, about ten minutes ago I asked DS what he'd like to do tomorrow (because a thread on here asked me what they'd say....) and he is in a whiny mood and wanted the zoo. I don't normally give in to whining but I thought it was actually a good idea, as both DD2 and DS love animals, we've been to London Zoo twice I think, though. DD1 is off at her biyfriend's house so it's just my two animal lovers, and I'd love to take them to a zoo!

Ones near here are Colchester and Whipsnade, but haven't had experience of them before? Also heard of a Parasidse Park and a Tropical Wings World of Wildlife, or some such? Any other suggestions? Not just a plain zoo, could be one of those open sanctuaries too, we've been to Ada Cole Horse Rescue before which DS loved, but was too babyish for DD2.

DS is 6 and DD2 is 13 (yes, I know she's a bit old to be animal obsessed but she wants to be a vet etc; and is animal crazy).

Colchester zoo is brilliant, my DC's love going. We've not been to tropical wings for a couple of years, but we've always enjoyed it there too. I think colchester zoo is definately the better option though, so much more to see!

Whipsnade is wonderful and is the partner to London zoo, if that's near for you there's also Woburn safari park

I've been to Whipsnade and it was lovely - we parked on the Downs and walked there. We saw lots of wild wallabies (complete with joeys in pocket!)

The smallish zoo in Battersea Park. We haven't been in a few years, it used to be good combined with a play in the park.

DD and I went to Whipsnade earlier this month. It is brilliant. We saw the lynx kittens and they were so cute.

There's Chessington of course but it will be expensive and rammed. Battersea is a nice low key day out if the location works for you, or what about a City Farm?

We like Colchester. It seems more compact and hands on than other zoos.
