Cardiff/Newport area nice restaurant recommendations

DH and I will be visiting his family in August and decided to get them to look after DS (2.5 years) one evening while we go out for a nice dinner on our own as an anniversary treat. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice to go, the kind of place I have in mind is something like a country house hotel or restaurant, but not ridiculously expensive! The silly thing is we used to live in Cardiff but just can't think of anywhere, although we were students at the time so it's not the kind of place we would have gone anyway.
Anyway, all advice and suggestions gratefully received Smile

There is a lovely little pub/restaurant in one of the lanes in Marshfield. They do a fab steak.

Cant for the life of me remember the name.

But further out but caesars arms in creigau used to be really nice.

I would go for somewhere in the Abergavenny area, which has some ridiculously nice food venues and isn't too far from Cardiff if you take the M4. In terms of great food and nice atmosphere, it would have to be either the Hardwick or the Walnut Tree. Haven't been to either to eat, but they're both on my dream list. Both of them are out in the sticks, though, so it would mean either you stay overnight there or one of you doesn't drink (a taxi back would be prohibitively expensive).

Cefn Mably- we used to live in St Mellons and went there a few times, it's lovely and I'd completely forgotten about it! it was 10 years ago though

Nullius they look good too, I'll be driving anyway, am hoping I'm pregnant Wink
