Relocation due to dh work

Hi - I am looking at location options for my family to live due to my dh new job in Southampton. We currently live in a small village in Hertfordhire (close to j20 on M25) and my dh is currently doing the commute to Southampton daily. We are all finding this really hard going and so relocating would seem the sensible route. Due to previously visits to the New Forest, we have looked at this area (Sway, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst) but are concerned that this may mean a further move later due to lack of future work opportunities (we have financial/hr backgrounds). I am also currently working in Chiswick two days a week. I would appreciate anyone's views and comments incl commuting into London and any views on other potential areas that we have not considered. My dd will be starting in reception in Sept 2013 and due to applying deadlines I need to make our move by mid January.

We have looked at Winchester but too expensive and busy compared to what we are used to. We also looked at Whitchurch and Overton.

We have a budget of around £400k.

Hedge End is quite nice and has a station for commuting if that helps. Its quite a bit further on than Winchester, but isn't as eye-wateringly expensive.
