Cornwall - where to go?

Hi

Thinking of going to Cornwall for the first time this summer. Would like somewhere pretty, not too croweded, with nice beaches and restaurants. Think we will probably fly to Newquay so somewhere within an hour or so's drive would be nice.

If anyone can reccomend a resort and beyond that accomodation would be greatful. Will just be me (6 months pg) and DH so doesn't need to be child friendly IYSWIM. Not thinking of camping - more a nice hotel or something

Any tips much apprecaited!

hi, have you considered Carbis Bay? It's within walking distance of st ives (20 minutes or so via beautiful coastal path) plus has the st ives branch line that runs to it in less than 2 minutes. st ives is fabulous, so much going on, lovely places to eat and things to see and do BUT it gets so busy. carbis bay on the other hand is very quiet, has the most amazing beach and is so picturesque. It is a fabulous place to go for grown ups and is also the perfect place for children and I guarantee you will go back when your family is complete! It's about 50 mins from Newquay and makes a great base - there are loads of places you can visit from there. not sure what you are looking for in terms of accomodation but there are plenty of self catering apartments, couple of nice hotels, plenty of b&bs, etc. if you want self catering, try this place ....www.seashellsatthesands.co.uk (it is truly fabulous and perfect place for relaxation) or if you want a hotel, try www.carbisbayhotel.co.uk/html/the-hotel.html (stunning location & good food) or the www.boskerrishotel.co.uk/hotel.html (boskerris is lovely but not terribly child friendly, but that won't affect you just yet! ) .

Ive been to Carbis Bay, it was very pretty but tbh I prefer Wales for a UK seaside holiday.

I'm not helping much. I'll leave.

Its actually far less crowded and the beaches are much easier to get to. The shops are mostly less touristy and its generally a more relaxed feeling.

Don't bother. Cornwall is vile.

Go to Pembrokeshire or North Devon instead.

Gower peninsula is beautiful. As is north devon coast as long as you avoid Ilfracombe, Combe Martin and Croyde.

Cornwall is full of the cornish braying tourists.

Cornwall has got mines and slagheaps an' all. You may as well go to Coalville on your holidays.

Oh ignore me I am stroppy re holidays. I am supposed to be going to inland rural France. I don't want to go to France. I want to go somewhere with a beach and wall to wall cocktails. The place where we are going to in France is like the lake district - very pretty but pisses down all the day long.

Bloody France. Pah.

Sorry OP I will piss off now.

GOML - wall to wall cocktails when you have to be up at 6.30am with the kids - i should be so lucky Have to speak up for SE Cornwall which is about 45 mins from Newquay. sure if you go to Newquay, Padstow or St Ives it is a horrible heaving mob but we stay on the South coast where it is much better - Looe, Polperro, Fowey. You can go up onto Bodmin Moor which is about 15 mins from the coast and spend a day wandering around fantastic scenery and not see a soul unless you want to. avoid the North Coast and head towards Looe. Wales ? isnt that where it rains all day, every day. it certainly did on our last holiday - 2 whole weeks of it! . We stay at Wringworthy Holiday cottages. Not sure how booked up they are but worth a look. Also the tourist board site means you stay somewhere that has been inspected so another good place to start. but, might be a bit late for August. early sept should find something. good luck hope you find somewhere nice.

Mawgan Porth is pretty close to Newquay airport. It's a relatively quiet place with a great beach and within easy driving distance to other resorts such as Padstow, Watergate Bay etc. It's also close to the wonderful Bethruthan Steps (also known as Carnewas) which has a hotel of the same name. www.google.co.uk/search?q=bedruthan+steps&hl=en&biw=1113&bih=875&prmd=ivnscm&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Jb8eTuyzIoi38QPp2KGmAw&sqi=2&ved=0CG0QsAQ

Check out the sands resort hotel, its just outside Newquay with two beaches within walking distance, its the sister hotel to Bedruthen steps but quite a lot cheaper. Check out the reviews on trip advisor its fantastic! We are going back for the fourth time!

No, personally I'd go south coast, to a nice little hotel near Fowey, or along the coast towards (but not actually in) Falmouth.
