Hello All,

I am looking for a tutor for my dd to start preparing her for the WGGS exams next year. Obviously there are loads of tutors out there but i was wondering if anyone could recommend one, perhaps one that has helped your DD or DS get into the Watford Grammer.
I intend to help her as well, however i will also to have a tutor who has a complete understanding of the curriculum and what is needed to pass these exams.
Many Thanks

I have a 100% success rate for the associated boys' school, but have only coached two children (my own).

There are only two subjects in the test: Maths and verbal reasoning.

The Maths is very straightforward and only includes topics covered at school in KS2. I used the Bond 'How to do 11+ Maths' book to make sure they understood all the topics, then Bond fourth and fifth papers for practice and GL assessment papers for 'mock exams'. A lot of children get high scores on the Maths, so accuracy and checking are very important.

The verbal reasoning is standard format (not multiple choice) and can include a wide variety of question types (not just the 21 types featured in 11+ exams in many regions). We used the Susan Daughtrey 'Technique and Practice' books for preparation, then Bond books for further practice, then Athey and Alpha papers as mock exams. There are 100 questions in 45 minutes, so speed is very important in this paper. Often the marks are lost on vocabulary questions.

The elevenplusexams.co.uk forum is very informative. The Hertfordshire section would be especially useful and I would post your question about tutors on there.

Mobabes,
If still you are looking for one...then i m really happy to recommend my DD's tutor. My girl has started very low profile and never been encouraged at school...but with the help of her tutor, she developed so well...she got into WGGS but also in Habs, NLCS and St Helen's.
Highly recommended...knows her job really well (bit strict though).
I m happy to forward her number...if u wish so....

aai72: that's an impressive list of successes. Well done to your daughter for working so hard and keeping her cool in the tests.

WOW! First time ever reading about people actually helping and taking the Mickey. I given up looking for one VR and NVR tutor for my DS after seeing another thread on the 11+ side site.

nicp123 · 24/03/2014 01:31

Sorry should read NOT taking the Mickey. Missed typed

Nicp, refreshing isn't it.

I would absolutely recommend the tutor my daughter used. She has an excellent run rate for state selective. My daughter only went to her for 9 months before the South West Herts Consortium exam and she got a score of 266. This would not have been anyway achieveable without her tutor. She managed the content and pace perfectly but more than anything my daughter loved going to her. I honestly dont know how she did it. If you would like her details please contact me.

goldie81 · 26/03/2014 13:00

My dd tutor was amazing too. She started at Easter & scored so well she got her first choice- parmiters. If you pm me I can pass on her details. Without it we really wouldn't have got there! Dd still wants to go round now to do extra maths!

winterbaby123 · 31/03/2014 00:45

Dear goldie81...I would really appreciate it if you could give me details of the 11 plus tutor as I for my child. Many thanks

winterbaby123 · 31/03/2014 00:47

Hi there would you be able to give details of the 11 plus tutor. I desperately need one to help my child prepare for it to do exam this year.

sbpo2004 · 08/06/2014 20:38

Dear all... I am very new to the site - this is my first post!

My husband and I have just made the move to Watford having commuted for the last year and are really enjoying it here. We have a lad in Year 4 and are trying to understand the local secondary school system. It seems that to give him a chance of doing his best in the 11+ exams we may need to find a good tutor offering one to one support. I can see that aa172 recommended one on 18.06.13, TGIF12 recommended one on 26.03.14 and goldie81 recommended one on 26.03.14 too. Are any of you able to forward me the details of these tutors?

If anyone else knows of a good one-to-one tutor for my son, I would really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

All the best, sbpo2004.

gill111 · 15/07/2014 19:16

Hi,
I am currently looking for a tutor for my son and I was hoping you could forward me the tutors details. So difficult knowing which tutor to use and clearly you were very happy with your choice.
I myself teach, but in a secondary school, so will help him at home. But still want the extra support as it seems so competitive
Thanks for your help.

busybee46 · 13/08/2014 08:32

Hi there,

I am looking for a very good maths tutor for my children. They both are doing great on Maths, but some extra help may push them further. Thanks for your help!

busybee46 I am looking for a very good maths tutor for my children. They both are doing great on Maths, but some extra help may push them further. Thanks for your help! Have you spoken to the teacher? Surely if your DCs are not being challenged then this is something the school should be addressing?

Tiny12345 · 17/10/2014 18:44

Hi all

I am also looking for a tutor for my child for the South West Herts School tests. Looking for someone who can help with verbal reasoning and maths. Can any of the tutors mentioned/recommended on here help? If they still have any times available I would be very interested.

Thanks.
