Lego storage!

dodecahedronandonandon · 09/08/2017 19:38

Does anyone have suggestions for lego storage? Not too pricey....I was wondering whether a tool box/storage thing with mini drawers would be a good plan? Or a craft storage box? I'm not very up to speed on either of those things though so any recommendations would be brill. Thank you Smile

Ooh my favourite subject. Yes, I am really that said. I favour the shallow transparent plastic ikea boxes. I sort by Lego ninjago, Lego technics, Lego classic etc, but no further. And heaven help any small child who dares to mix the categories!!

I'm completely the opposite to penhacked, I favour the chuck it all in together method.
You can buy drawstring mats which keep the Lego in one place whilst you are playing with it, make it easy to rummage around for pieces then when it's time to tidy up you simply pull the drawstring and its all contained in a big bag.

DS has 2 of these for his Lego. We have sorted it into colours.

We also have a smaller version of fairgame84's storage. Haven't quite figured out a foolproof system but we're going in the direction of size of piece with technic pieces stored separately.

We have lots of the plastic toolboxes with teeny compartments (like you'd use for keeping screws, nails etc).

Except DP and I disagree on which bits should go where. Grin

A couple of years ago I spent way to much time sorting lego in colour and category and putting it all in those craft storage boxes with varying sized compartments that were around loads with the loom band craze. The large bits were sorted and put into plastic bags.

There are probably better ways that you could spend your time, though if you want a sixer yellow roof tile I know exactly where to find one.

I second colour sorting. That way any lego set whether it be ninjago, avengers, Jurassic world, batman etc can be made by finding the piece you need by looking in the correct colour draw. Esp as the odd piece has gone missing & this way there's always duplicates of teeny tiny pieces of lego. Unless he wants to make hundreds of sets in 1 go (not going to happen). The instructions are all kept in a box too. I'm so tempted to get the craggle out every time he completes one!! Goodluck OP. Lego is everywhere in this house!

Colour sorting is good if they like making following instructions. Not so much if they just want to make their own creations and need a round 4er with a flat top. (Can you tell I'm the minion finder?!)

Went searching for automatic sorting machines and wow - some people have invested a LOT of time in this:

Am Grin at the thought of "accidentally" buying TWO TONS of Lego off eBay.

I'm following, lego is taking over my house and the craft box/tool box set up isn't cutting it anymore.

I may or may not have about 14 thousand Lego pieces...

Does the owner want to sort it? Because to be honest it's kind of tedious and my own collection is only half-sorted. Sometimes it's easier to just rummage each time you build especially with a smaller collection.

Drawers are good because they're near-instant to open and close. Tool/craft organisers and small tubs are a hassle once you need more than a few.

Transparent is good. Opaque wants labelling.

Sorting by colour isn't always best. It's easier to find an orange 1x2 plate in a box of 1x2 or even 1xn plates than in a box of orange pieces.

'Freezer to microwave' type food containers are OK if you want something really cheap, they're about 1 or 2 quid for half a dozen.

Be careful with cheap tool/hardware storage if it's for little ones. There are some rather rough edges and spiky corners on some I've had.

The piles of lego sorted by colour and neatly (!) left in piles on the floor have gone back into one huge box as I could no longer stand the way they magically move to all corners of the room and embed themselves in my feet!! They are now jumbled up until I buy one of the fab solutions suggested on this thread. The Ikea option is looking particularly good (and thankfully available online!) Thanks for the help Smile

We have a trofast and a tray for Lego superheroes, construction, police and fire stuff, random vehicles and a box of random bricks. We also have a small Lego case with sections for people, small bricks, special bricks, accessories etc. He's only allowed so much out in one go and he has to re build them (correctly or in his own way) before they go back in the box so random bits off a set don't end up missing x

I just came to ask the same question. We have a lot of Lego city and minecraft built stuff how should I store this?

We have a tower from the 'really useful boxes' company. It was about £35. It's on wheels so easy to move around to wherever they are playing. Also have a lego head storage box for all of the figures.

Ours is sorted by colour, plus a drawer of random bits that are half built creations. I think a better method would be to have it sorted by type as it's such a pain finding the right parts.

(We do also have 2 under bed storage boxes full of jumbled up lego - we need a clear out!!)

A couple of built sets are on display, plus all of the micro racers. But I don't like how dusty they get, so I have moved a lot of the builds to an another under bed storage box.

All instructions kept separately in a plastic box.

We have the trofast but I bought two units, put them back to back to make a table with two accessible sides, then put Lego boards all over the top. So it's like a giant Lego play table. And yes, the theory was to keep 'friends' on one side and 'star wars' on the other all coordinated, but the reality is I sweep it all in to whatever drawer is free.

My dd has rainbow coloured storage drawers from b&q to keep all her Lego sorted by colour

Another one recommending the Ikea trofast and then it depends what type of Lego and how the DC play with it as to how you store it.
All instructions are kept in box files because if you ever move house Lego takes up far less space if you dismantle it and spend the rest of your life rebuilding it!

Do you have space under your sofa? Saw a great idea on Pinterest for a huge drawer that slides under the sofa. You just fill it with all the Lego and then push it under. Sort of like the cot drawers you can get xx

Have been off MN for a while ...thanks for all the brilliant ideas for lego storage! Sadly no space under the sofa but have found a mega divider box that seems great for all the smallish 'bits'! Found it in a hardware shop. It's made by Wham products (!) www.whatmoreuk.com/?s=divider&post_type=product
The sorting is still a work in progress but so far so good!!!
