The weights room

Home gym vs membership

I'm currently weighing up either getting a gym membership of just exercising at home, leaning towards home but wanting to know how people find it!

What are the biggest challenges you find with home exercise?

I have done it off and one for years. The main challenge is motivation - at the gym, there's nothing you can do but work out. At home, there's distractions everywhere. If you are lucky enough to have a big house with a dedicated exercise area you can use, so much the better. Depending on what exercise you're doing, you might need a bit of room, though it's by no means essential. You can do bodyweight workouts, or yoga or pilates, with very little floor space.

If you want to lift weights, you would probably need to lay out a significant amount to start with on decent kit, and in that case I would say a gym would be better, because then you can access advice and support as well as not spending so much to start with. Gym memberships can be very cheap these days - I only spend £20 a month, no joining fee or contract.

I use the Les Mills app (9.99/month i think) at home, particularly in winter. I have a mat, step and barbell set (for BodyPump)

Pros
I like that you can do different types of classes at a time that suits you.
Cheaper
No-one on the equipment you need.

Cons
As PP said motivation when no-one is watching Grin
Do you know enough to exercise safely/correctly?

I'd also think about things like:
Are you motivated or annoyed by exercising with groups of people?
When do you prefer to exercise?
How far is the gym door-to-door?
Realistically when would you go round family life?
