Help me with an explanation for this - possible ghost?

My (extremely rational usually) friend has recently moved into a flat where objects have started being moved around when she is out.
The last thing that happened was two LED lights clicking on simultaneously, two of those letters with lights in them, that have batteries and aren't linked to each other or the electrics. Her son and her witnessed it.
I want there to be a rational explanation for this but can't think of one. She is now convinced and is getting a priest in.
Can anyone think of anything rational/scientific?

Why not? What's most likely? Two identically built lights have the same dodgy connection, or there's the spirit of a dead person manifesting itself in your friend's apartment playing silly fuckers with some lights?

Yes, if they were bought at the same time, they're likely to develop problems at around the same time. is your friend unusually nervous and superstitious? This seems like such an easy thing to find a perfectly rational explanation for -- it's not as if it's flying kitchen tables and ectoplasm coming out of the toaster!

Also, sometimes if the batteries are about to go, things can start playing up. I imagine that if she bought them at the same time, the batteries in them are likely to run out at the same time. I have loads of different battery operated light strings etc. They’ve all developed loose connections and flash indiscriminately.

Anything to do with lights will have a logical explanation.

If their child can turn their head all the way round like an owl and is projectile vomiting green icky stuff whilst swearing profusely then I'd suggest getting a priest in.

Even of you can't come up with a rational explanation, that doesn't make it a ghost, I don't know is a perfectly good answer. For it to be a ghost, there would have to be evidence that, 1: ghosts exist and 2: this was a ghost.

Just to be clear I want to agree that it is not a ghost. Firstly because I don't believe in it and secondly that would freak me out.

She initially thought it was the ex-owner but now has a security gate with camera etc. And no one was there when it happened

The friend needs to buy more lights so she has every letter of the alphabet then ask Mr or Mrs ghostie to spell out a sentence by lighting up one letter at a time.

If the message is, 'Hello, it's Auntie Maud, you can find a diamond necklace hidden in the base of the table lamp I left you.', then all well and good.

However if the letters light up with, 'You're going to die mwha ha ha', tell your friend to start sprinkling that holy water pronto.

In Hilary Mantel's brilliant novel about a smalltime outer 'burbs of London medium, Beyond Black, it's because the dead are as confused, trivial and smalltime as the living, and they cluster around the main character at seances talking about cardigans and bunions and kitchen fittings and asking whether the number 64 bus has gone.
