Dog just freaked out.

My son took our dog for her normal walk, they always go through a small church yard on the way back.
Very peaceful, benches with tables for picnics, but no one there today.

Suddenly the dog became terrified, whining,tail down between legs, ears flat. Struggling to run away out of the place.
Growling and trying to jump into my son's arms all the way back up the road.
Son was with friend who is sensible etc, and she was very shaken/perplexed by it.
What happened?
Both people are late teens. They say there was noone else at the church yard, no sign of foot injury, nettle or anything.

Just sunshine and birds singing.
