Creepy, odd places you have been

I have been dying for a good creepy thread for ages so thought I'd start one

Two stand out for me -

Doing the Dales Way with DH, we stopped one night in a tiny Dales hamlet. 2-3 houses, pub, church. That was it. Not much to do and it was a summer evening so we followed a public footpath through a kissing gate and went for a dip in a deep stream.

When we came back the same way about 30 mins later, someone had nailed 3 freshly dead voles to the gate.

Also, on holiday in France, staying in a rural villa, I went for a run early one morning. Ran past a back road signposted to a quaint sounding village. Decided to take a look. Down a narrow wooded road for a hundred yards, quite a dark road, then out into bright August 8am sunshine in a naice little village.

It was the vacances and the place was deserted, but it was just.... off. The cars were on the drives in most cases, but the shutters were all shut. No dog or cat, not even birdsong, just dead. There was a local noticeboard where the most recent notice was from the previous October. It was a lovely day but the whole place just felt dead. I tried to be brave for about 5 minutes and then cracked and fled, back down the dark road, with the strongest feeling that something was right behind me, just like when you're a kid going downstairs in a dark house and you daren't turn round to look back at the landing.

August in France is the vacances when folk go on hols. A bit like Factory Fortnight when UK families decamped to Skeggy or Llandudno in July.

years ago, with my parents, we visited an Aztec sacrifical site, high high up in the mountains above the oxygen level. we all got out of the car and had a look, and got straight back in - spookiest place I have ever been (although the lack of oxygen may have been part of it)

There's an oak tree growing in the middle that they call the witches finger and the ruins are supposed to be haunted by the witch.

I'm not a woo person at all but this place felt really eerie. Despite walking miles to get there, we left really quickly and I never want to step foot there again!

The German underground hospital on Jersey was one .
The other was an unconsecrated grave on Dartmoor. We'd been to Widdecombe and had read in a guide book there that there was a grave on the Moor where fresh flowers appear regularly and nobody knows who replaces them. It's said to be the grave of a local girl who was jilted and then committed suicide. Anyway we arriver at the grave. It's a calm summers day with no breeze. Suddenly the wind picks up and the jar of flowers tips over. 4 kids and 2 adults have never run so fast!

I camped as a child in pluckley which is supposed to be the most haunted village in England . With the guides - very disappointing. Not even a drop in temperature.

Had a very odd reaction to a single room when visiting the National Trust Workhouse property in Southwell. Literally could not bear to stay in the room. Was fine in all the other rooms.

Walking in Derbyshire, up near Eyam Hall, several years ago and we came across an abandoned farm, with a main house and a couple of little cottages. I'm presuming they were abandoned due to being bloody miles away from anywhere and having no access to services.

Anyhow, we had a bit of a poke around and my (now ex) dh decided to venture up the very dangerous looking old staircase in one of the cottages, then promptly came flying back down again and legged it outside! He said there was a pentagram drawn on the floor, and some kind of animal skull on a chair.

Took him a while to compose himself, but I managed to convince him to have a look in the next one. There was a door leading to what I can only imagine was the cellar, and as I opened it, I got the most awful feeling of dread, plus my dogs, who had been happily mooching around, suddenly went absolutely ballistic and took off with their tails between their legs. We couldn't get away from there fast enough!

I went to a hen weekend and we stayed in a converted barn self-catering place near York. There were vaulted ceilings with exposed beams. As I took my first steps into the kitchen I looked at the beams, and I'm sure I saw a body hanging from them. It was just a momentary thing, but a 'suggestion'. I keep meaning to email the owners and ask about the history of the place.

Took a patient to a convalescent/long stay hospital mid winter. Hospital was previously a workhouse. Heavy rain outside, 6pm and dark. Patient was immobile (wheelchair) and somewhat confused so no real conversation.

Arriving at hospital, porter told me main ground floor corridors all shut (norovirus) but if I took lift to disused 2nd floor corridor, walked the length then back down lift on other side that would be fine. He said he'd escort me as no lights on/working well, he'd a decent torch.

Lifts were all iron gate affairs with a great deal of clanking and keys, and bloody hell the upstairs clearly hadnt been used in 40 years - floral wallpapers , barred windows, tiny little cell like windows in each door. Most rooms filled with old hospital junk, splints and prosthetic limbs and zimmers etc . Silence apart from us . I couldn't get patient downstairs fast enough. Porter left me to go back alone - I just felt I was 'intruding' on somewhere horrible that I wasn't meant to be and I was running out near enough. Big mural of grumpy Victorian faces on the stairwell, bizzarely. In the dark that gave me a fucking fright and a half. Horrible place.

A mental health hospital/facility in Sydney. It felt like anything good just...left me. The Dementors in Harry Potter is a very good portrayal of that feeling. I couldn't wait to leave.

Not so odd but the other day I was walking to catch bus from my mum's , twentt five minute down single track lane , pass two or three farms and cottages. First farm I heard a branch snap so looked and clearly saw a child hiding behind tree in garden , longish bowl style cut and flares. Very out of place. I blinked - that farm hasnt had children all the time I've lived near - and he vanished. Nowhere he could have gone. Very odd. There was a treehouse at the spot a few years ago but it was rotten and falling apart so I always figured any kids were a long time ago.

I put it down to sleepiness on my part but I definitely saw a child for a second. It was a weird feeling as if it wasn't quite real more like a dream though.

Heres a funny thing-in my younger days I was a aspiring ghost hunter,spent many a long cold night in supposed very haunted places all over the country where absolutely bog all spooky happened.
The creepiest place i ever visited was a toy musuem i took my kids to when they were small. I have never felt so uneasy anywhere-before or since. Its closed now and scheduled for to be demolition but whenever we drive past i still shudder !

I've been to oradour .
In my home city there is a Tudor row of houses. They create a sort of courtyard. In the courtyard there is a door on the second floor facing outwards. So if you were in the building and went through the door you would fall from the second floor into the courtyard. I've been trying to find a picture but I can't online. I find it very creepy as it just looks wrong.
A few years ago I was the lead teacher on a school trip to London Dungeons. I had to walk through the enterance and queuing area to find the education officer in the dark by myself. I was so freaked out I honestly wanted to cry

As a junior auditor I got all the glamorous jobs including checking stock numbers. One time we audited a funeral parlour and lucky me got to count all the various bits and bobs related to embalming and corpse preservation .
I was on my own for hours, contemplating mortality in a freezing room which stank of formaldehyde. Unsurprisingly this was incredibly creepy, and when my colleague popped in to check on me I nearly died of fright. (At least I would have been in the right place!).
