My third floor is haunted (not a fanjo euphenism)

We bought a house with a history. Basically the previous owner killed herself by hanging herself from a tree in the garden after many decades of mental illness (mostly depression it seems).

The house was in a state of some disrepair. [understatement]

When we bought it the villagers didn't obviously march up to us and tell us what had happened - particularly as the next door neighbour found the body. But over the course of a few years it has come out.

Now I am not of the 'woo' persuasion and nor is my partner (who doesn't live with me). But we're a bit spooked tbh.

Our third floor is our spare room, no-one wants to go up there. No-one WILL go up there because you are made to feel bloody uncomfortable up there. We have had a child visiting who knew nothing of the history of the house who came back down after exploring saying 'the lady doesn't want me to be up there'. My children won't go up there alone and in fact don't go up there at all if they can help it.

My partner and I were getting ahem romantic up there last year and we both stopped and I burst into tears and neither of us could work out why we felt so sad and uncomfortable.

The problem is if I even go up there to clean I get so utterly sad within minutes, I have to leave the room and I have to leave the house to get happy again.

The dog won't go up there either and growls at the stairs to the top floor.

Other than board the door up and forget it exists what can I do??

I'm a SAHM and every day I'm at home most of the day and sometimes it's like a fog of sadness in the house, I literally feel it fall over me and I have to go take the dog for a walk.

I'm NOT depressed. I'm actually really happy with my life, but the house makes me sad. I don't want to move because it's a great house. But I need to do something.

Are there any woo types out there who could advise?

whomovedmychocolate Tue 04-Oct-16 20:14:35

Oh and I cut down the tree in question without realising too!

Therewere5inthebed Tue 04-Oct-16 22:17:03

I have no advice but have had the same feelings in a room for similar reasons, it literally felt as though the happiness was being sucked out of me. Some woo folk on here have recommended burning white sage and smudging the room but if I were you I'd wait until someone more knowledgeable than me comes along.

flowers in the meantime to keep your spirits up (no pun intended).

AnyTheWiser Tue 04-Oct-16 22:20:22

Goodness, wmmc, you do live in some interesting houses!

This is a different one to the one with the weird secret corridor/room at the top?

AnyTheWiser Tue 04-Oct-16 22:27:05

Ok. Even if you've no belief in anything spiritual, it cannot hurt to have a vicar come and bless it, can it? Could you contact your parish church?

whomovedmychocolate Tue 04-Oct-16 23:18:00

Anythewiser - sold that one! New house yes - this one also has a secret room which I installed though. grin The vicar visibly paled when he found out where I lived - he obviously is NOT keen to call by.

Therewere5inthebed - I'm going to cut some sage tomorrow so we can try smudging. But honestly I think it's bollocks so I'm not sure if it works if you don't believe.

Canyouforgiveher Tue 04-Oct-16 23:22:42

I think you should read Gad's Hall and the sequel by Norah Lofts. You'll never sleep again!

AnyTheWiser Tue 04-Oct-16 23:23:14

Hmm... not good about the vicar! Whatever could he be worried about? Presumably this one isn't over a graveyard?

expatinscotland Tue 04-Oct-16 23:26:20

If you use search, there's such a thing as 'House Healers'. A poster called Dowser was writing about them on another woo thread.

Canyouforgiveher Tue 04-Oct-16 23:33:32

The vicar visibly paled when he found out where I lived - he obviously is NOT keen to call by.

Seriously? I'd say the average vicar has seen a lot worse than a house with a suicide and/or a room with a dodgy feeling to it. Is he just ordained and very young?

whomovedmychocolate Tue 04-Oct-16 23:36:52

The lady who lived here was pretty notorious locally. I think that's why. He's not young. It feels wrong to ask for a christian blessing when I'm not christian though. There are some friendly witches in the next village I could ask I guess?

EstelleRoberts Tue 04-Oct-16 23:37:40

Get in touch with the minister of your local spiritualist church. They will arrange a home visit and can tell you what you're dealing with, and move it on for you.

EstelleRoberts Tue 04-Oct-16 23:38:36

Oh, and they won't mind in the slightest if you're not a believer/Christian etc.

BennyTheBall Tue 04-Oct-16 23:42:03

Ridiculous of the vicar.

I simply do not believe in woo of any description. My house is 400 years old. Several people must have died in it, in fact we know the guy next door (when it was all one house) killed himself.

There is nothing to sense and nothing to fear. It is all in your imagination and when you accept that, you'll feel much better.

Muzzcub Tue 04-Oct-16 23:51:08

I am very woo and would have to move house

Canyouforgiveher Tue 04-Oct-16 23:52:47

Ridiculous of the vicar.

To visibly pale? He probably couldn't help it - physiological reaction presumably. (Mind you I have no idea what visibly paling actually looks like)

I did the smudging and asking "it" to leave us alone after a few spooky episodes in my new, but very old, house. The episodes stopped straight away, nothing since, and that was years ago. Worth a try, I think.

whomovedmychocolate Wed 05-Oct-16 07:19:26

Dogsandwolves - that's helpful. I have grown a load of sage. I'll give it a go. Worst case scenario is my house smells like wet dog for a week. smile

ooonatoffolo Wed 05-Oct-16 07:23:45

Ooof. I unwittingly moved into a house where there had been a (recent) murder and suicide. No issues.
The house I am in now though... my vicar laughed at me.
I have been in touch with Dowser. Cant hurt.
Good luck.

Dowser Thu 06-Oct-16 23:29:48

Hi, yes I've done a healing your home course , just in August as it happens. My house had nowhere near the history of yours but it still needed a bit of fine tuning.

The person who taught the course to us is a lovely man called Adrian Incledon Webber.

He was an estate agent for 26 years and kept coming up with the same houses that refused to sell or changed hands very regularly.
He'd learned to dowse as a child so he went on some healing your home courses and that's now his occupation.

It sounds to me like this lady did not go to the light at the time of her death. This often happens with people who take their own lives.
It maybe that you just need to do a soul clearing.
There are other things that can lead to detrimental energy within the home.
One of the main ones is underground water , then lost souls, earth energy lines, ley lines,
Detrimental attachments , detrimental energy forms...a huge list that you may have quite a few of.
Each house is unique.
If you want to pm me your postcode and house number I will remote dowse it for you.
( I won't stalk you ...I promise)

If I get a bit stuck..Adrian will help me out, I'm sure.

He helped with a house that we called ...the Scottish house, which I won't go into here.

Anyway I must leave it for now...absolutely knackered ;-)

CalmItKermitt Thu 06-Oct-16 23:51:20

Do people really visibly pale?

Dowser Fri 07-Oct-16 09:41:51

Only seen it when my dh had to give blood. Nurse messed around getting the needle in and he fainted.

He has a very ruddy complexion and I watched the colour drain from his face. He went a horrible yellow.

So,I suppose it could happen if someone has had an awful fright and looks like they are about to faint.

expatinscotland Fri 07-Oct-16 16:35:28

I just watched this house on A Haunting that was so bad the owners went bankrupt and got the hell out. And another in Ontario where the owner bailed.

Dowser Fri 07-Oct-16 20:10:57

Oh dear I'm afraid I might have frightened you off Op. that's understandable. Giving personal details to strangers on the net and all that.

However if you'd like to take me up on my my offer maybe you could post s pic of your house, or the room even. Something I can just tune into.

I did a little dowse just on your user name and s some interesting things came up but wanted to be sure of my accuracy before I said anything.

Anyway. I'll leave it entirely up to you.

Hi op. It doesn't matter if you don't go to church call a vicar and have it blessed.
