Today it is my daughter's boyfriends' birthday. So I texted him a HB message this morning. About an hour later I get an indicator on my phone saying he is calling me. I answer there is a woman on the other end who says she has received a text from me wishing her son happy birthday I say oh no I must have sent it to the wrong number as it is my son in law's birthday. I just thought it would be easier to say SIL rather than the actual relationship. She then asks who I am - I give a false name (at this point it suddenley dawns on me this daughter's BFs mother. I then start digging an even bigger hole when she asks his surname and I give another false name. She then goes on about what a coincidence as it is her son's birthday too, but he isn't married and doesn't live at home. I obviously texted his old home number ! I then try and get off phone asap. I have deleted the HB message and think I will deny ever contacting him today.

Why i hell didn't you just say who you were???

But why in double hell is the SiLs mother phoning and interrogating, what she believes to be wrong numbers??

I'm baffled too, why when she initially said she'd got a text wishing her son happy birthday didn't you agree that you'd sent it to him? So you text a landline by mistake instead of his mobile? What's the problem?

So, at worst, she might think one of her DS's friends texted him to wish him happy birthday & is not admitting it. If she does think this, it won't connect to you.

If she does tell her DS the number & he recognises it at your's just say that you thought you had texted the wrong number & the person started quizzing you. You didn't want to give it out real names because you didn't know them. Then laugh Grin, it's quite funny really...both you and his DM were seriously over thinking things!

I can sort of see how this happened as you weren't expecting it and then got embarrassed as he clearly isn't your SIL! If she's the sort of person to ring to see who it was (it was his message after all) maybe she'll work it out from his mobile contacts as she must think it's odd that it's both a local number and on his birthday! I would just explain to the boyfriend and make a joke out of it but say how embarrassed you are!

Oh, ahah loose I see; the awkwardness was because you refeted to him as your SiL. That makes sense now (a bit)

Yes Looseleaf you've got it :) I was confused why a woman had got the BF's phone and then didn't want to say who I was to a stranger. However, there is a happy ending to this massively embarrassing call. I felt so bad that I range her back later in the day as I thought if we met I could never look her in the face. I explained and said she must be very worried that her son is living with a girl whose mother is completely nuts - she laughed and said she was mad too! We had a huge laugh about it and the BF & my daughter and both sets of parents are meeting up in a few weeks for lunch where no doubt I will the source of great amusement :) :) :)

ProfYaffle I put it here in The Unexplained as I couldn't explain why I had had such a stupid call and didn't just fess up immediately I realised who the woman was. My daughter thinks is totally hilarious and now everyone in the family knows and quite happy to have a mad woman in the family - I'll blame peri-menopause for lapse of sense !!!
