Disappearing mushroom

Just that really. I was cutting up mushrooms in the kitchen of my & DH's first house (modern, we'd had it from new) & one rolled off the board & onto the floor.

I saw it roll & heard it hit the floor. Immediately I went to retrieve it but it wasn't there.

The kitchen was small & fully-fitted & there was literally nowhere it could have gone without being noticed. The door to the hall & the outside door were shut.

I checked inside all the cupboards, even though they too had been closed, in the sink & the bin in case it had bounced...

hmm

I've always assumed it somehow slipped through a gap in the space/time continuum grin

Do you have any pets? dog or cat possibly ate it? confused

I had some earrings that DP had given to me back in the dim and distant past. Black opal screw/clip earrings - I don't have (or want) pierced ears - these were in a china tray on top of my tallboy in the bedroom.
Except when I went to put them on once, there was only one. I checked everywhere - everywhere - to the point of emptying out the vacuum cleaner bag and checking through it. Couldn't find it. I checked again and again and again - floor, inside the tallboy, in all my woollen clothes - but it never turned up.

I suspect Borrowers but it might have been a magpie nipping in through the open window

WitchWay Fri 31-Oct-14 08:39:36

We had no pets at the time. DH would have eaten a raw mushroom but he would not have picked up something from the floor & eaten it.

The mention of earrings has reminded me I've recently lost a couple from two different sets - different house, modern, owned from new - I am 99.99% sure they are both in the bedroom, in fact I remember dropping one the other week. The other I remember taking off the other day (with it's twin) - I'd've realised then if I'd lost one during the day.

I've looked thoroughly including tipping out various handbags that were in the vicinity but nothing. Very frustrating as they are both ones I have worn a lot.

Borrowers.

caught in the turn-up of your trousers?

thatsn0tmyname Fri 31-Oct-14 08:46:24

Trod on it and stuck to shoe?

treaclesoda Fri 31-Oct-14 08:51:19

I remember as a teenager putting a pair of jeans back in a drawer with a purse still in the pocket, and some money in the purse. The next day, the purse was gone. I searched the drawer, got my sister to search, nothing. A few weeks later I was putting the jeans on one day, and there was the purse, with the money, in the pocket. It's over 20 years ago and I still can't get my head round it.

treaclesoda Fri 31-Oct-14 08:53:37

oh, and I had worn the jeans in the interim and the purse wasn't in the pocket then. And my sister had left home, so it wasn't her playing a trick on me because she wouldn't have known that the purse was in the pocket until I had already discovered it was missingconfused confused

A very close friend of mine does a lot of cross stitching. The other day she sat at the table, sewing. She dropped a 'bobbin' of green thread on the floor...and it disappeared. She looked everywhere-in bags, the bin(even though she was nowhere near it),under all the furniture;everywhere. It never turned up.

AWimbaWay Fri 31-Oct-14 11:42:30

When I was a teenager I was helping clean the bathroom, we had one of those soap trays that attaches to the wall and you had to pop the tray bit out to clean it. Well I popped it out, it flew up into the air and was never seen again. All bins etc. had lids on, not like it was small either confused.

Do you think someone could have trodden on the mushroom WitchWay and walked it out on the bottom of a shoe?

AWimbaWay Fri 31-Oct-14 11:44:00

Just noticed thatsn0tmyname already asked about the trodden on theory.

My mum lost an egg. She took it out of the fridge, put it on the table, turned around to close the fridge (small kitchen) and it was gone. Not splattered beneath the table, not rolled out of sight - we didn't have a fitted kitchen and she pulled everything out, no sign of it. We didn't have any pets at the time, she was the only one in the kitchen.

She assumed that wherever it was, when it went off she would smell it, but no, it never gave a whiff.

Now if anything goes missing in her house we say 'it's gone to join the egg...' grin

I had this a few days ago with DD's new pen lid. It flipped into the air in the living room, which was very clean and clear and then it just disappeared. We searched high and low - no lid.

I just found it 5 min ago in my handbag hmm

We have a lot of disappearing vegetables/fungi in our house, but the oddest was a full net of onions. DS1 was helping me put the shopping away and I tutted at him for putting the onions in the wrong cupboard. Opened the door to put them in the right place, and they'd gone altogether. We emptied out the whole cupboard looking for them, but I had to buy new ones on the end.

DS1 left home in 2012, so that's at least 2 years for those onions to get rank enough to announce their location. We never saw or smelt them again.

WitchWay Fri 31-Oct-14 13:29:22

I'm sure the mushroom wasn't trodden on - I was barefoot, DH (in another room) in socks, the thing was quite sizeable 1½" across - plenty big enough to notice. There just wasn't anywhere it could have gone - small rectangular room with fitted units all around to the floor, no gaps.

I suppose it could have ended up on top of the high cupboards somehow but it fell, it wasn't knocked with any force and just how bouncy are mushrooms anyway?

Have you posted about this before OP? Because if not, you're not alone - I distinctly remember reading about a vanishing mushroom on MN before!

WitchWay Mon 10-Nov-14 20:43:24

I think I did mention it before but that might have been on another chat forum.

I had something odd turn up mysteriously a few weeks ago.

I put my winter raincoat away in March, checkedall the pockets first and it was completely empty.

Took it out to wear it again, stuck my hand in the pocket and pulled out a 1937 3p coin! Even wierder, it's inside one if those little snap close plastic bags as if it has come from somebodies collection.

This happened to me too. I was babysitting for a friend, had put her baby to bed and went to do the dishes. I took my ring off, sat it beside the kettle, did the dishes and when I turned back round to pick it up, there was nothing there. I searched for ages - it was of sentimental value - and it was truly gone. My friend looked for it and searched every nook and cranny when she was moving, but it never reappeared hmm

I've just moved house and I put up two small pictures, with some difficulty as the nails were very small and I kept hitting my thumb with my big hammer.

I put the hammer down and have not seen it since! Searched everywhere and still not found it.

I studied jewellery at college years ago and I remember learning to make settings for stones. They were small so fiddly to polish and would get hot. When one if the girls was polishing hers, she accidentally let go and it flicked off somewhere.

After searching for half an hour she found it, only it wasn't hers. It was the setting made by a student the previous year. That student had since died.

I dint think she ever found hers.

MIL lost her wedding ring in 1985, it disappeared from e kitchen windowsill while she was washing up.
We bought their house in 1992, she and FIL moved away.
Around about 2000 DH was digging a patch of the garden 60ft from the house and there is the wedding ring.
FIL had died two years previously, so particularly emotional. Weird, but emotional.

Sorry, to resurrect old topics. I've just discovered this part of the forum and have gone back through all of the posts.
When I was a teenager I bought myself a ring. It was like a claddagh ring but it was in three parts and the hands clasped together over the heart. I loved it.
Took it off one day to have a bath and left it on the bathroom shelf. By the time I got out of the bath it was gone.
I turned the house upside down looking for it.
About a year later my brother was running a bath and came in to my room holding it. He found it folded up inside the towel he took out to use.
Even he seemed genuinely freaked by it.
Years later a psychic told me it was bringing me bad luck and to throw it in to running water or bury it. I haven't had the heart to do it though it spooked me enough to stop wearing it 😞

It'll be with the emergency pouch of microwave rice I took out of the cupboard last night. Put it down by the microwave, turned to take something out of the oven, turned back and it was gone. DDs were upstairs, DH was in the kitchen but swears he didn't touch it and we both turned the place upside down and no sign of it. Had another look this morning and nothing.
