Insurance for part loan

My 12 daughter has been part loaning for a few weeks but only riding when the owner and her daughter (other rider) has been present. Now my daughter is confident enough with the horse the owner has said she can go down and ride on her own (obv with myself). There seems to be confusion over what insurance is required for part loaning. The owner thought I had to take out full insurance for the horse but she has that and when I spoke to an Insurance co they said you can’t have dual insurance. Basically I am trying to find out what we need to do and what insurance we need. Any help or advice would be appreciated as it seems to be a minefield of jargon!! She’ll be riding approx 2-3 times a week where’s she kept and possibly a local hack!!

You don’t need to insure the horse, just your daughter for riding. Petplan do rider insurance (I’m sure other insurance companies offer similar policies), and if your dd is a member of either the Pony Club or BHS then she’ll be insured as part of her membership (I think you have to be a Gold member of the BHS but junior Gold membership isn’t that expensive). You shouldn’t need to have any insurance for the horse as it’s not a full loan (where you take on all the responsibilities of horse ownership but without paying for the horse in the first place). What you’re describing is a horse share, so the owner has full responsibility but your dd needs to be covered in case she has an accident while she’s riding

Thanks, yes she is in Pony Club so I’ll have a look at Rider Insurance. The owner just said that if my daughter was to have an accident and the horse got injured she didn’t want to have a huge vet bill. So if the worst happened and the horse was injured in my daughters care who is liable. Does her riders insurance cover this?

You can buy a horse rider Policy from NFU Mutual that has optional vets fees cover. Look online at their website for cover details.

When my daughter was sharing, she was covered by BHS membership but the horse’s owner would have been liable for any vets bills. I think that’s one of the risks you take if you’re an owner letting someone else ride your horse. It was only when we took him on as a full loan (and then bought him) that we took out insurance for him as well as her. If the horse is already insured by his owner, he’ll be covered all the time not just while the owner’s riding him

If the horse got injured while your DD was riding then her horse insurance should cover it. She should check the terms but most policies don't have restrictions on riders, so it doesn't matter who was riding the horse at the time it got injured, providing they weren't behaving in in grossly negligent way of course! As others have said you need personal injury insurance in case of any injury to your DD and also third party cover (so if there was damage to anyone else's property in an accident such as damage to a car, that would be covered too). Both of these are covered by BHS gold membership insurance so that would be your easiest option...

You need a proper contract with the owners which clearly states what you are / are not responsible for or this could get very messy and expensive .

I have a horse on full loan. The owner has the horse insured fully and I am a named rider on the insurance. It was easier for the owner to keep up the policy than for me to take out a whole new one. When I’m on holiday a friend rides and looks after the horse. i notify the owner and she notifies the insurance company with the name of the holiday cover rider.
In your situation the owner should continue the insurance they have and notify the company of your daughter’s name as a permitted rider / handler
