Just said goodbye.....

to my beloved family pony. He was 23 and had been suffering with recurrent and increasingly more severe colic over the last few months, and on the advice of the vet we have had him put down in between episodes whilst he is reasonably well.

I'm absolutely heartbroken, he's been with us for 12 years through thick and thin and been our family's best friend - he taught my DH that horses and ponies can be fun, given great pleasure to lots of small children, and been a wonderful friend to me - he was my "go to" comfort in hard times and I shall miss him dearly. My horse is screaming for him at the moment and it's so hard to hear, he's got another companion but hasn't bonded with him yet.

I can barely look at the pictures for tears.

You poor thing, so sorry. What a good thing to do though, rather than him suffer more.

Really sorry to read this, I know how hard it is to do this.
In my experience you never stop missing them but as time goes by you can remember them with love rather than tears.

Big horse is still calling for him, it's so sad. I brought them in this morning and he looked round the yard and when I let him back into the field after a ride he cantered all round the field neighing. He's now standing by the yard looking forlorn (and as though he'd like to eat his new companion who doesn't really understand it either). I wish I could explain that he's not coming back...

Big horse has stopped eating his hard feed, he's out 24/7 and has plenty of grass so I'm not worried re his weight, more his state of mind. He's stopped calling but still stomps around the field looking for the pony. I took him out on Saturday and he wasn't himself, subdued really. I don't know if he's grieving - do they, for that long? - so will take him out again tomorrow and see how he is. His coat is fine, his eyes are clear and he seems otherwise sound and well. I'm getting used to not seeing pony, but still think about him a lot (and cry at night), the whole thing is awful at the moment.

Sending hugs frosty.

You were kind to me when I had my mare pts on 13th October.

I still cry everyday. The only thing that kept me going was DD's horse, but she has now decided that she can no longer cope with him and wants to sell him so more heartbreak to come.

And a lady at the stables lost a beautiful mare to a hideous colic episode on Saturday.

Sad Sad Sad

I am sure they will grieve for a considerable period. Does your big horse not have another companion? Did you let him see the body? I have heard that it is good to let them as then they realise their friend has gone.

Hi Exit, it's horrid isn't it? Yes we have another pony who's been with us about a month but big horse loathes him at the moment - ears back and teeth bared if he comes too close although they will graze together ok, just at a distance.

Circumstances didn't allow for him to see the body, I'm sure it would have helped but just wasn't possible. It will come right, just take a while I think. To top it all I think his back is sore, he wasn't keen jumping so I'm waiting for the back lady to get back to me. Ho hum.....

I'm sure they grieve you know . When I lost my girl under the pear tree her ashes are now buried under , big horse didn't see her go . And yet for weeks after, I would see him laying down on the exact spot for hours . This from a horse that never ever laid down in the field. He was very subdued for months after although he did get better .

So sad isn't it.

I still miss him terribly, although I think dhorse has reluctanctly accepted the new companion. Dpony was so good at giving cuddles, he'd just stand there with a slightly resigned expression on his face, and wait until you'd had your fill. New pony just can't cope with that level of affection yet, and is still pretty nervous - heaven knows what he experienced before spending three years in a rescue centre - but hopefully he'll learn that all I want is a hug!
