Anyone else watching WEG on the red button?

I missed the dressage competition as I didn't know it was on tv Angry

Cross country phase of the eventing is on the red button now and my word the course looks hard going. They've already had to shorten it by 1 minute due to the ground conditions and the first two riders to go out failed to complete.

Zara Philips has been out as pathfinder for Team GB and went clear but had a few hairy moments, she was about 30s over the optimum time.

The other GB riders go as follows:

11.16 Fox-Pitt
11.44 Wilson
12.04 Townend
13.16 Cook
14.44 Meade

Red button coverage is on till 3.25pm so I'm assuming that's the whole day's riding.

There's going to be a highlights programme on regular tv on Sunday I believe.

William Fox-Pitt also clear & 30 seconds over the time.

The American team have no chance of a medal now after their first 2 riders retired.

Thanks for posting this - didn't know it was on !

Wow, Jock Paget is out. Bad, bad day for NZ.

GB have 3 of their 4 team members home clear.

Woo hoo! William Fox-Pitt leads after cross country but there's only 1 fence between the top 5. Germany have 10pts in hand over GB in the Team competition with a further 30-odd points back to the third placed team.

Tough looking course from what I saw. It'll be a nail biter tomorrow that's for sure, my fingers are crossed that they all pass the trot up in the morning.

William Fox-Pitt really is a class act, to go out there and set that target and keep it at the end of the day is fantastic, and I thought the other 3 did really well - I didn't see Zara Phillip's round although I gather it was a bit hairy at times, but both Tina Cook and Harry Meade looked solid.

Zara was a bit scary at times, but High Kingdom helped her out. The worst error was at the bounce fence where they took off too early for the first element and struggled to make it over the second. She certainly had to sit tight!

It's a heck of a course isn't it?

I recorded it and am still watching, currently at the hold whilst they rebuild the fish jump at the step out of the water.

Rudolphe Scherer's round really made me smile, he was having a fabulous time Grin

I watched about half of it and then frankly got bored. I loved Badminton this year; it asked a lot of technical questions, experienced riders were caught out with mistakes but no one was hurt - brilliant fun to watch. This was the exact opposite, endless similar fences, loads of pointless skinnies and a lot of horses simply running out of steam, refusing at innocuous looking fences or cantering past obstacles.

What a day. I work for WFP so am very proud of the big man and Chilli. However so terribly sad that Harry's Wild Lone collapsed and died after the XC. The highs and lows of the sport. Poor poor Harry. It was so nearly a fairy tale.

What a terrible day for Harry Meade though , it's not been his year . And for his groom too , apparently she idolised him . 13's no age for a horse .

Very tough going indeed for NZ, only 1 rider in the team event still in.

Aussies have risen from 4th place after dressage, to 3rd place after cross country. Have met Shane Rose in real life and had cross country lessons on his property in the outskirts of Sydney. Go Shane!

Terrible news about Wild Lone, what a terribly long way home it will seem for them all. I'm not sure I can watch the showjumping, I'll have no fingernails left (and the grass needs mowing!).

It's going to be a long and tense afternoon. So hope WFP brings back a gold. After all his success it is hard to believe he hasn't won a title...

Watched on main BBC channel today (can't access red button coverage where I am). Blimey; talk about gruelling.

Sad that W Fox-P didn't win gold because he has come so close so many times he deserves it - very good that team won overall silver though.

Thought the Germans deserved their win - they just don't make mistakes do they?

Horrible news about Wild Lone Sad also shocked to see Irish rider (don't know her name) hit her horse unnecessarily harshly at one fence (out of anger ifyswim not trying to wake him up).

Charlotte was spectacularly good as ever

Looking forward to seeing Michael Whitaker on Thurs now Ben Maher out

Stupid question from me.... The eventers air jackets seem to be under their tops?

I see they have them on as can see the clips, I'm guessing it's for team colours but will the inflation not be prevented?

Some of the eventers aren't wearing an air jacket as far as I could see. Stuart Tinney on the Australian team was on his old hand Pluto Mio, and I noted that he didn't have an air jacket on at all.

I haven't used and air jacket, but they seem to be on over their body protector and under the number holder. The number holder would be loose enough to allow the air jacket to expand fully in the event of a fall.

Number holders now have elastic sides rather than the old no stretchy material so they will stretch if an air jacket was to go off. Some riders wear them. Some choose not to.
