how to turn out?

I have a gorgeous highland mare who looks absolutely fab, last year we started showing in veteran classes. Usually she is scrubed within an inch of her life with no plaits and only "just so" trimmed and i think she looks ruggedly beautiful. Somone has suggested that she have a running plait and a tail plait as well. She does look nice with these in but I'm not sure if people will be bothered? It is only a teeny show.

Lol! I thought you were asking how to turn out.

I was going to say, stick on rug, shove on head collar, open gate, put horse in, shut gate. Grin

A highland should be shown unplaited and in as natural state possible even for things like veteran classes.

Don't plait her whatever you do! Natural, no trimming is acceptable in the stud book rules. Mane, tail, feathers and even whiskers /beard should be left on.
A god bath and groom, show shine, pig oil or baby oil though mane and tail and a bit around muzzle and you are done.

Natural - definitely no plaits, clips etc. The only thing we may do is to pull the mane a little to get it to roughly the same length but still look rough if you know what I mean!

Try and get her coat as good as possible and make sure she looks well covered but fit - not fat.

I love Highlands as it was a lovely one that gave me the confidence to ride after a 30 year gap (bless you Buckthorn) and want to see a picture of your lovely horse.

Thanks for the help everyone :) she went to the show all furry feet and flowy mane! we won our class as well! We never normally place because she is a bugger gets stage fright.

Arent they just trebles! Theyre such awsome creatures. My girl is a veteran but never wears a rug :D cos she rocks! I've had loads of stick for her being a "easy to ride type" just because she is well built but she looks all rough tough but acts like a young arab type lol
