So I'm not going to be encouraged to wear a mask at school next week...four days INSET and then term begins 7th September
But I have to wear a mask in other indoor settings and to attend my own daughters wedding next month ...
What's the difference ???
Full time TA in year four

So you can wear a mask? Wear one.
I really hope they allow children to wear mask too. Ridiculous otherwise.

When I asked I was quoted the DFE guidelines... I masks are not needed in schools and the letter to parents mentioned that the SLT won't be encouraging mask wearing....

Honestly just wear a mask. What are they going to do ? Physically take it off you?

I also think some primary school kids will come in wearing masks too.

Is it just me that is dreading being told the kids need to wear masks? How is that possibly going to work? I can’t teach with one on because I can’t be heard properly and kids can’t answer questions with a mask on because they can’t be heard properly. They are uncomfortable and distracting and steam up glasses and I don’t think kids having had 6 months out of school need anything that gets in the way of their access to the teaching or focus on their work.
Schools can not be completely safe if they are going to do any kind of job educating, and everyone needs to be more upfront about the level of risk/ reward they are willing to accept to get children back in school.

Just read secondary schools in lockdown areas will need kids to wear masks and it's now at headteachers discretion in schools. Think that's just for secondary.

I think the message will change by the time we start next week... Certainly for secondary. They will all be wearing them anytime they are moving around the school, I'm sure.
I can't imagine Headteachers putting themselves at so much risk by telling staff and students that they are not allowed to wear masks (as my trust is currently doing). Headteachers are not medical professionals and they should not be allowed to decide something as critical as this for their schools, it's madness. 😳
Watch for the Union guidance which must come out soon...

cathpot - other countries seem to be able to educate children wearing masks - you can get masks that are comfortable to wear.

This is how I feel too.

Although having said that, I think that it will be applied in most secondary schools, whether in local lockdown or not! Just hope it is applied from Year 8 upwards (as some Year 7s will not be 12 years old until later on the academic year), as then it won't apply to my dd1.

We’ve been categorically told NO MASKS.

Wow, in Scotland guidance is we should wear a mask if within 2 metres of pupils for more than 15 minutes.

I have my mask on most of the day. Used to it now and pupils not phased in the slightest!

I'm in primary. Been told no masks or visors at all, even when trying to peel 4 yr olds away from their parents on their very first visit to school. Parents not allowed in the buildings and very, very little transition visits. We are in a local lockdown area, too.
