Will you still be in school as well as working from home for your own class? (& potentially with key worker children)?

All of our teachers will be teaching YR, 1, 6 or keyworkers full time. Presumably this will be the case in the majority of schools unless they have very low take up of places.

Y2,3 & 5 teachers will take half of Rec/Y1/Y6.
Our one teacher who is not class based will be covering for a shielding Rec teacher.
Y4 teachers and TAs will be with key worker/ vulnerable kids. That is currently 22 in years 2-5, but we expect that to go up as more people entitled to it take it.
Teachers will have very little time away from children during the school day (we can't put them all out into the playground with a few adults to supervise). Planning will be shared but teachers will have to prepare resources for the groups of children they are working with.
God knows what's going to happen to years 2-5. Gavin said they've got the Oak Academy!

In my school the year 3/4/5 teachers will be in cleaning between sessions and doing the (what is essentially) all day break times because they’ll be staggered.

It’s all hands to the pump in our school. Even our head teacher is going to be in the classroom!

Report
rosesinmygarden · 17/05/2020 09:17

So does this mean that year 3-5 Will no longer be set work by their individual school? Surely teachers won't have time to do this as well as all the cleaning and teaching their 'bubble'?
It's like it's not really been thought through...
I'm a supply teacher and tutor so not currently in school but interested in the ongoing situation.

Roseinmygarden - Gavin was asked about learning for other year groups in yesterday's press conference. He referred to the outstanding online resources of the Oak Academy. I don't think parents in Y2-5 realise what opening for R/1/6 will mean for them. In the set up at my school, teachers are going to be teaching all day. It might be only 15 children, but lack of assemblies whole school playtimes/lunchtimes will mean our contact time will increase. We've got a meeting with the head at the beginning of the week. I await to hear I'm what teachers are excpected to do with y2-5.

rosesinmygarden · 17/05/2020 09:48

So it's highly likely they will just be told to hone school with online ready made resources.

From a teacher's point of view I really hope there is a sensible, manageable plan. From a parent's point of view this is not really ideal and I suspect many will kick off.

In reality I suspect pressure will simply be put back on teachers by SLT to 'do the right thing' by their students no matter how many hours it takes. I for one and relieved not to be a class teacher right now!

How is this working @blueglassandfreesias? Surely they need to take half classes of R, 1 and 6?

Report

We'll need all our staff in school (except one teacher and a few TAs who are shielding). There will still be provision for key worker children.

blueglassandfreesias · 17/05/2020 10:48

@ reefedsail we have teachers available for the other classes.

Report
reefedsail · 17/05/2020 10:56

Really? You have enough teachers for YR, 1, 6 and keyworkers to be split into groups of less that 15 without needing the Y3,4,5 teachers to have groups at all? Is it a private school? You must have so many teachers!

If you have that many teachers wouldn't it be between to reduce the numbers in your bubbles rather then have teachers hanging about and cleaning. We think we can get our bubbles down to 12, maybe 10, if everybody teaches.

How are the Oak teachers going to keep producing resources if they are back at school??

I am secondary but do worry for you and your contact time/breaks and the idea that you are now toilet cleaners.

Is the Oak stuff good for primary? It's awful for KS3 and 4 English.

NCTDN · 17/05/2020 13:00

But if you get your bubbles down to 10, then they announce other year groups return, the bubbles will have to go bigger anyway and the teachers that have been mixing with infants will then be teaching juniors.Confused

Either the 'bubbles' or the 'no rotas' will have to give if they want the rest of the year groups in.

So it will be either: back to classes of 30 and no social distancing possible anyway, or a rota. Yes, obviously on a rota each adult/ pair of adults will have to teach more than one group of children thus risking the teacher being a 'virus bridge' between those groups.

Do you have other solutions?

This would be my suspicion too and why I hope Ireland doesn't go for a similar approach - or a one day in school/one day at home plan. It's an unreasonable workload.

How will teachers get their legally mandated breaks during all this though? Or even the chance to go to the toilet?

blueglassandfreesias · 17/05/2020 16:56

My school is getting round that by only offering half a day per year group so all children back but part time.
We don’t have space to do it any other way.

Only using half your teachers to teach the returners on 50% timetables is in total contravention of the guidance.

However, it is only guidance- not statutory. I expect your Head will face questions from some parents though.

reefedsail · 17/05/2020 18:12

Half days is also useless for infection control. The afternoon group will just pick up anything the morning group had from a) the teacher and b) the classroom environment. You may as well have them all in all day. Confused

At least week on/ week off there would be some hope the classroom would decontaminate through cleaning/ time over the weekend.

No half a day per year group every day.

We will have an hour to clean the classroom in the middle of the day.

Using only half your teachers does leave you with enough staff to teach key worker children and maintain remote learning for the year groups not in.

I'm doing exactly what your OP says - teaching Y1 and planning for Y3. Will be massively reducing the quantity and quality of Y3 stuff tbh.
