How many would return if leave was to be unpaid?

I've seen advice from our HR consultants. Basically, atm the advice is that where possible, people with particular health concerns for themselves or their families should be supported to wfh wherever possible.

However, if it is deemed "critical" that they perform their role in school and they refuse to do so, leave should be unpaid. ATM most schools can support staff wfh, indeed there is plenty to do remotely, but as numbers of students in school increase, this will become harder to do. Schools can't be in a position where they are paying teachers to stay at home and employing cover.

If you currently feel unable to be in school, what would you do if you were told staying at home would be unpaid?

Can such staff access carers' leave or sick leave of their own?

Isn't carer's leave unpaid anyway?

No I am being serious. The people who currently feel unable to work due to family vulnerabilities etc aren't sick

It is like this in other government agencies. I'm currently doing risk assessments for the 12 I have in vulnerable categories to work out how to get them back to work but if it's not possible/they don't want to they are able to apply for unpaid leave for for 3 months but after that it will be a case of return or resign so that someone else can be hired to do the role that isn't being done whilst they aren't in.

One of the 12 is off because her husband has cancer so it's not for her if you see what I mean, and she is not being paid. We are civil servants so not private sector.

I know your question is whether people would go back or not if they were not going to be paid, but I do agree that people who refuse to return to work should not be paid. By refuse I mean anyone, in any job, that is not advised to be shielding, saying they don't want to go in to the school, office, shop or wherever they normally work. If there is not a clinical reason for you not to go to work, you should be in if required to be.
