Online Tutoring

Hi,
Anyone do any online tutoring? Looking at it as a potential income stream now I'm working fewer hours in the classroom.

Would it be your own business or would you be working for someone else? 've looked into it, working for a company, but thought it wouldn't pay very well. Can you do one-to-one tutoring?

I'm a professional online tutor. It's good money and incredibly interesting, but you need to work hard to build up a client-base. If you like I can link to my website so you can have a look at the sort of thing you'd be doing for a full income stream

Thanks that would be fab. I'm a Y6 teacher and I do small group support but current contract is temporary (Secondment Cover) so my ideas was to start on my days off and if it works out maybe up the hours when my school contract finishes...

I left the classroom about 28 months ago and now do private tuition both face to face and online.

Face to face seems to be more popular for primary where I live but I do tutor some Chinese children online and the pay is not bad bearing in mind there's very little prep. I also do online for some regular clients on occasion when they can't travel to me. I like Zoom as a platform.

Pay is about 40-60/hr, sometimes with more for things like admissions, so pretty good really! I'd invest in a good mic, the best wifi you can get and a good laptop too. Clients prefer different video software, I actually think Skype generally has the best connection, but Zoom works too. For clients abroad you may need things like WeChat/BOTIM just depending on location, but these are free. Online whiteboards are also great, I prefer BitPaper, but Concept Board also works well.

Thanks all- My specialist area is English Language at KS2 so I was thinking mainly of SATs revision, entrance exams for Indie Secondary (I went to one of the big local ones as a child) and English to children overseas. I love your website WhatTheThunderSaid.

WhatTheThunderSaid your website is amazing, really professional, and has made me think again about online tutoring. Do you mind me asking how much work you get and how you market yourself? Also, how much of your work is during the day compared to after school?

Argh, sorry @SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo, I went away for a week and predictably failed to bring my Mumsnet password on my phone! I currently do between 30 and 40 sessions a week and mainly market through word of mouth now, but I started by marketing via local agencies.

I can work whenever I feel like it, I don't have DCs to think about so currently do 7am-1pm (ish) and then 6pm-10pm (again ish). Please do PM me if you have any more questions and I'll endeavour to stay logged on
