TA to teacher?

I have just sent off my UCAS application for teacher training. I’ve applied to three local schools direct providers. I’m currently a TA at the lead school for one of them and if successful I would be placed at my current school. My headteacher is keen on this happening.

Has anybody else taken this route? Are there any distinct pros and cons for training to teach at the school I’ve been a TA in?

I trained at the school I was started at an LSA at, I then after a couple of years took on delivery of lessons and cover and when I asked to do more they said had I thought about teaching. I took the salaried teacher route through my local SCITT and stayed at my school. There's a government incentive now too so schools get £7k towards training you, and you pay nothing. Total win win.

I've now qualified, completed my NQT year, worked hard and am currently second in department in an independent secondary school. And it all started from being a TA needing a job and new to an area...

Doing it now. It's great. Makes the beginning of the year much easier too when you already know the pupils, staff, policies, routines.

Ah thank you for the replies. Yes, I can certainly see the benefits of knowing routines and the children really well. But I worry about shifting my role from TA to teacher and whether I will find it hard to adapt/the children may find it hard to see me in a different role. Particularly the children with SEN that I work quite closely with.

Yes, I can understand that. I was an HLTA so already taught 4 classes every week. Transition from TA to teacher was tricky in the first few weeks, but the more lessons you teach, the more you start to feel more teacher than TA. The children have been quite accepting; some of the older ones asked me about it and were really positive. I am still me, whatever my role.

Just think how amazing you'll be for those SEN though - you already know their needs inside out. That's invaluable!
