Anyone resigning in October?

I wish I was! I have a potentially exciting opportunity coming up in November which might give me the freedom to take a career break (from which I would like to never return to teaching, quite honestly!). But I won’t know anything until after the October deadline has passed so I’m stuck in my current school until Easter at least.

I repeat a little mantra to myself virtually every day about how much better I have it than I used to: I’m only working 0.6, I have a tiny commute and I can pick up my children, my planning is reduced because I have a huge bank of resources and I should just suck it up. But every night I am awake thinking about work, feeling stressed and anxious and full of dread. There is a lot of micromanaging, vast amounts of data-related expectations and really shitty behaviour which is what drags me down the most. I am regarded as being successful/good at the job but what that costs in terms of effort and energy really feels like more than I have to expend at the moment. I’m twelve years in now and just drained and so badly out of enthusiasm!

I wish the notice periods weren’t so lengthy. If I do end up resigning to leave at Easter, there will be a lot of pressure to stay through May for the GCSE exams as well.

I wish I was too. I'm in my 17th year and struggling now to manage all that's expected, alongside having children of my own and a husband who is constantly worried about my health, both physical and mental. As much as I enjoy working with the children in my class, everything that goes along with it is exhausting. I'm working on a plan to get out but we need my wage so it may take a while :-(

Congratulations Sewingbea, that must feel amazing!

FedUp your post is so familiar - I feel like most of my colleagues feel the same.

They might release you before Easter if your opportunity comes up. Good luck!

I'm staying in teaching! Moving schools to one much nearer to home and it's a school that isn't in a MAT. New head is well thought of by people who worked with her at previous school so I'm hoping that it will be a positive move. Fingers crossed!

Planning on submitting an application for a job at a different school this week. Undecided if I'll definitely go if I get it, but feeling very empowered for getting the ball rolling!

I wish I could but we need my salary and i can’t find another job that pays enough & fits in time wise - saw an interesting one (not in teaching) but interview in Nov I can hardly apply / go & say oh I can start after Easter.

I really don’t think I can keep going much longer though (14 years in).

Planning to hand mine in next week. Sick of the relentless aggressive 'monitoring' and micromanaging.
No job to go to yet but I'd rather be skint than feel like this.

@WillowB that's really grim. I do wonder when the government are going to focus on retention rather than just throwing money at recruitment.

@Sewingbea I know Sad
They are at the heart of this. Schools are completely data driven now. Academies like ours also seem to have their own set of hoops to jump through as they have additional monitoring systems and inspections.
Such a shame as we came into the job to work with kids not become entangled in some huge bureaucratic nightmare

Hopefully the data wheel will slowly stop as Ofsted aren't interested in that anymore.

im seriously thinking of leaving
1-1 in nursery, working with 1 teacher who think she knows it all and 1 TA who talks if she feels like it and does practically fuck all
and neither understand autism, its crap

Good luck @northernknickers! I hope you get the job you want. Is it still teaching? And that's a great user name Grin

Yes still teaching...today's job is Assistant Head, tomorrow's year 3 class teacher (which is what I am now). I am already SLT but not AHT so it would be a step up. Different schools. About to leave...wearing my lucky northern knickers 😉

I handed in my notice last week, after 22 years in teaching. I'm taking at least a year off work, and then deciding whether anything interests me enough to take a leap back into working again.

I work in a fabulous school with wonderful colleagues and a great head teacher.

I love my school, but the job is so all-consuming that even though I work part time, I work almost every day at home, for at least a couple of hours.

I'm both excited and scared about what it will feel like in January!

How did the interviews go @northernknickers?

Didnt get it unfortunately, but I got great feedback so I'm happy with that. Keep trying!!

I'm leaving at Christmas. Technically I retired at Easter, but was asked to stay til September, then Christmas and I've been working 3 days since then. I thought I'd feel very sad about leaving, and at one point considered staying the full year, but I've had enough. Our first half term has been horrendous! I feel so sorry for my colleagues who have to work much longer to access their pension than I have.

Report
Sewingbea · 31/10/2019 06:46

@northernknickers what a shame. Onwards to the next one and better luck then hopefully.
@Soontobe60 will you be letting management know why you're not staying?

Report
Lara53 · 01/11/2019 21:16

No, but I wish I was. 23 years in and had enough. Work across 4 days and so fed up now. I need to bring in similar £ and have no idea what to do next!
