Frustrated in job hunt

I'd better start by saying I'm in Scotland.

I'm coming to the end of my probationary year and the hunt for a job has begun. However, despite being told 'there will be lots of jobs' and 'you're not going to struggle to find a post, the authority is very short of teachers' there just aren't any posts advertised.

It is so frustrating!

Don't lose heart. There will be jobs appearing gradually over time. Authorities have to work out a few things first - redeployment of current staff, placing probationers etc. Speak to your mentor and they should be able to reassure you.

Agree that it’s early days yet - they’ll be still processing resignations, looking at timetables/workload for the following year to see if they can get away with not employing anyone

Just hope I have a job to go to in August whatever happens. There's always the supply list I suppose.

If you do start on the supply list then I am sure you will end up in a long term contract too.

What subject? Some areas (Highland, Moray etc) struggle to recruit in some subjects. Worth a look.

Ok, this is a sort of WWYD - any suggestions welcome.

I trained later in life, having worked in an office job for years previously. I taught for 4 years in a small, single form entry school which I loved. Did really well - well thought of - but due to the size of the school and low staff turnover, there wasn't much chance to progress so I moved on.

I took a class teacher job in a very big school and was initially told there would be lots of opportunity for development of middle leadership roles. Well there aren't (this doesn't just affect me; there are several of us in the same position). I've obviously tried asking for this, putting myself forward for responsibilities / projects etc. Meanwhile, behaviour is truly awful and I'm finding it very difficult to keep positive. Been there 2 years.

Last term, I applied for an SLT position in another school and was shortlisted but ultimately unsuccessful. There's incredibly few jobs advertised this year and certainly nothing else comparable.

So - would you try to get a different class teacher job in another school with (hopefully) better behaviour or sit tight and wait for something that's a step up (but feel less and less able to get it as you're so bloody ground down)???
