Can I tutor my own students on mat leave?

I teach MFL and am on mat leave until after Easter. One of the Year 11s parents has just asked me to tutor the student while I'm off. Can anyone tell me if this is allowed? Thanks

I think you'd be leaving yourself open to potential breach of contract, or worse safeguarding allegations. Check your contract and maternity t&cs in the first instance, as at my last school teachers were definitely not allowed to tutor students.

Blimey, you're a better person than me to even be considering it! I think it was very disrespectful of them to ask - your maternity leave is your time with your baby! On the other hand, if you chose to and were able to use some of your KIT time for Y11 revision sessions, that would be a slightly different matter...

Nope. Not even a little bit.

I did lots of tutoring during mat leave including one child from my own school, but never any that were my actual students. School were fine with it. Just run it past your HoD /HT to check.

Check with HT. Is this for money?

At my Au school, it is strictly forbidden, even if it's a student you don't actually teach, a conflict of interest. If you tutor for nothing you have tutor them all for nothing. If you're getting paid then you are conceivably favouring the paying student above others.

Check maternity leave conditions, as advised upthread.

I would check with your school. This would be totally banned at our school on 3 accounts:

  1. I am not to go to a student's house or them to mine. I am not to have any contact with a student or parent outside of school hours.
  2. Private tutoring of our own students is not allowed.
  3. It was in my maternity policy that I was to do no other work during mat leave. My school wouldn't even budge for exams marking

Isn't it pretty universally viewed as bad practice to tutor your own students?!
